I am going to take the BC Calculus test this May. My school does not let anyone go ahead in math, and I’m in algebra 2 this year despite knowing all material, which is why I decided to take the test early and start taking college classes. The problem is, I’m worried that colleges will see that I have not completed pre calc or Calc BC in school. Will only taking the BC test (and getting a 5) still hurt my admissions chances at top schools? Even if I proceed to get As in harder college classes?
I also want to open my schedule up to take other interesting classes, such as Computer Science, Chemistry, etc
No. For that matter, they won’t care about your AP score. What they will care about will be your grades in college math courses.
If you get A’s in multiple advanced math courses, this will be true.
If not, you will be someone who got through Algebra 2 in HS. AP scores don’t mean much in admissions.
Do you have a college that will let you take MVC, DiffEq, Liners, etc., having never taking a course beyond Algebra 2?
If your school doesn’t let you go ahead, and your aren’t going to take pre-Calc or Calc, do you not have HS graduation requirements in math?
Fwiw, studying for a single test is usually a much less rich learning experience than classroom learning, homework, tests, etc. You may find that further math studies require true intellectual understanding of the concepts, not the memorization and problem solving steps needed to pass a test.
Chances are pretty good that whatever college at which you decide to study college math is going to require a placement test too. So it isn’t just the AP BC exam you have to consider and pass.
