I also posted this in BC's thread.

So I got into both of these schools and the deposit deadline is fast approaching.

I'm in quite the dilemma, not because of which school I like more, but the prices.

BC would cost me full price, around 53K a year and my parents are planning on taking out a 20k loan each year just to help me pay for it. I'm upper middle class, so I did not qualify for any financial aid but a federal stafford unsub. loan for $3500 a year (which basically won't help me).

About appealing: I have already called my financial adviser and he seemed adamant about me not qualifying for a grant.

Binghamton costs roughly 17k a year, and my parents would not have to struggle to meet tuition costs. I know that it's the "best value" or whatever but seriously, how does it par with private schools? I don't mean to sound arrogant but I never imagined going to Binghamton ): It wasn't bad at all when I visited, though. What I don't like about Binghamton is that almost everyone is from New York, it's around a pretty depressing area, the networking might not be as strong, and I don't know how great the facility is. (Not trying to bash, just giving a viewpoint that I would be happy to see a counter to)

Personally without looking at money issues, I would choose BC over Binghamton because I visited both schools and BC stood out much more to me. I love everything about BC, from its strong academics to good athletics. The campus is gorgeous, and everyone was really friendly. Again, the financial problem bothers me especially with the instability of jobs and recession. My dad is worried that he might lose his job (extreme case).

What do you think I should do? Is BC worth it? Why should I go to Binghamton instead? Also, can anyone comment on the academics of Binghamton's business school vs CSOM's?

have you compared info here?

to be honest – it seems a little late in the process for you and your parents to be dealing with resolving the money issue (which is a very real issue).

just something to consider – if your dad loses his job (is this a real concern or just a general worry?) would you have to leave bc? fyi – look at some of the binghamton transfer threads – i think there are kids there who were accepted to binghamton som right out of hs but couldn’t get in as transfers. som is the hardest school at binghamton to get into in general, and from the transfer threads it seems like this was especially true for transfers. so don’t make the decision to go to bc with the assumption in the back of your mind that you could always transfer if family economics later warrant it – i’m not saying its impossible, just realize its difficult.

bottomline – i think you and your parents have to have a very serious talk about money, not just for next year but in terms of what the future is likely to bring.

We have considered it a while ago and my dad said that he’s willing to help finance my education because he wants me to go a school I like.

I have compared the information there (:

Losing his job is a general worry because of job instability. He works on Wall Street. I’m not sure if I would have to leave BC because my finaid adviser at BC said that they would take things into consideration but I’m worried that my house or parents’ assets might be considered too (which might still not make me eligible for much aid? i’m assuming here)

Thanks for answering - I will talk once again with my dad when he gets home.

it may not make you feel any better, but this year especially, many students are in the same situation in comparing private and public school offers. only your parents can really help you evaluate how the financial issues need to be weighed in your family.

binghamton’s som has a good reputation, especially in ny. i can’t try to convince you its a better school than bc (quite honestly i know nothing about bc) but som is a good school.

Go for Binghamton. BC is very nice, but not worth the 53k.

SOM at Binghamton is amazing. Top knotch.

Go with Bing if your financial situation is precarious. If it isn’t as tenuous as it sounds go with BC since you seem to like it there and college is a once in lifetime deal. Bing has a great SOM. You can always transfer.

Sometimes, you can delay acceptance for up to one year. If you can do this, say at BC, then try Bing for a year. If it is not for you, then you can transfer into BC, with the delayed acceptance. 50,000 per year, is a big deal, and for either you, or your parents, a lot of money to borrow. The Bing SOM has a great reputation here on LI, and in NYC too.
