Any one can share some insights about BC High (Boston College High School). All I know is that it is a Jesuit college prep school that accepts students 7-12. How does it compare with other prep schools in the area such as BB&N, Belmont Hill, Noble&Greenough, etc? Academically? Culture-wise? College matriculation? Music/Art? Sports? Acceptance rate?

Any comment is appreciated. Thanks so much!

I don't think this will help, but I'll try.

I played their rugby team at a tournement up in New Hampshire. I'm pretty sure they won, but they might have come in 2nd. All of the guys seemed really nice and were really into fair play.

The 7th and 8th grades are a recent addition. It's pretty well known for sports, I believe. Academically strong, although probably less strong than some.

Here's a link to a recent Boston Magazine piece on prep schools. I'll note BM is not known as an unbiased source, and there have been doubts cast on some of their assertions, but I think they do tend to capture the culture of the various schools.
Thanks bs_helpful and nemom. I just recently heard from someone that BC High has very high matriculation to Harvard. Wonder if this is true. I've not paid attention to this school.

My son is in his 2nd year and a current sophomore at BCHS. Prior to BCHS he went to a local day prep for middle school.

BCHS was not our first choice, although it was my son's. After one year there, I am a convert and would highly recommend the school to anyone looking for a challenging curriculum, good teachers, and very competitve athletics. My son loves it.

BCHS's facilties do not compare to the local prep schools. My son's middle school had incredible athletic facilities and really great trainers who took good care of the kids. BC's atletic facilities pale in comparison. Trainers do not want to do things like taping up a foot, or monitor rehab. It can be very difficult to make sports teams at BCHS, and a lot of boys who were considered great players in their hometown, find themselves being cut at BCHS. Class size is much larger than the local preps, although they are probably in line with the local publics. Course offerings are less than you would find at the preps, but equal to the publics.

If your son is not into sports there are tons of clubs and intermural activities.

The boys are not babied or coddled like they are at the local privates. There are many fewer guidance counselors at BCHS than you will find at the local preps/privates again probably more in line with what you would see at the local public schools.

I don't think you will see as many kids going to HYP as you would from Belmont or BB&N, but I think that is because BCHS accepts a broader range of students than the preps do. There are many more average boys at BCHS than those other schools.

My son is challenged and is doing well academically. I feel the education he is getting there is as good as he would have gotten if he continued at his old prep school. He made 2 out of 3 sports teams he tried out for and loves the fact that BC's teams do so well. One last thing, if nothing else, BC truly tries to grow a boy into a man of good character. The boys are incredibly well behaved and taught to care and treat others with respect. The teachers, for the most part, walk the talk.

Feel free to PM me if I can answer anything specific or if your son would like to talk to mine.
