Hey guys, while I’d love to go BC I think its a bit of a reach, so Im just wondering if it is a realistic reach, or just a “don’t bother applying reach”.

SAT: 2100
GPA: 3.55 or 3.6 (Ill find out which one this week)
GPA Weighted: 5.2 (6 point scale, 6 points for AP/Honors classes)
10 - 12 AP/Honor classes throughout high school. Its about a split in AP/Honors

ECs
Organize and Manage a team for the Brain Tumor Society Race For Hope every year (going on 4 years now) - tema raises approximately 1500 dollars a year.
Volunteer at my grandmother’s senior home 3x a week, for about 3 hours each day. Have been doing this for about 2 years now. Its specifically for people with Alzheimer’s Disease
Volunteered at TOPPS soccer Freshmen - Junior Year Every saturday (Help kids with disabilities play soccer)
DECA - placed 1st at the regional competition, and was a state finalist each time
NHS - just a lot of community service
Own an Ebay store - for me its not just a hobby, its actually more so work - I own a registered EBay store, am a powerseller, and actually commit up to 4 hours a day on programming, ads, etc
FBLA
French Club
Ultimate Frisbee

Total community service hours - 2130 - lol, counted all the logs to be exact

As most of you can see, Im pretty devoted to community service, more so than anything else. Just because of experiences I’ve had with Alzheimer’s Disease and Brain cancer I try to get as involved in possible :D

Your SAT test score and ECs are fine. Your CS is exceptional, assuming it’s accurate. Your GPA is low, compared to the majority of applicants, but is offset slightly by your SAT and stellar CS. I wouldn’t be shocked if you were accepted and I’m certainly not betting against you. Just make sure you can afford to attend, IF you get accepted because BC merit-based aid is pretty much non-existant except for just a couple of handfuls of accepted applicants each year. I know because my D is a full-pay student there…

Dear rbethell76 : This thread has already covered the substantive issues relative to your profile : GPA (low) potentially offset by your AP coursework, board scores (second quartile), community service (magnificent).

So, if you think about these three elements, to where would you call attention? Clearly, your community service can provide you with a differentiation point from the general applicant pool. Can you describe how you have impacted the community in terms that a general reader can understand? More importantly, does that experience demonstrate anything that can be directly translated into how you augment the Boston College campus fabric? Our suspicion is that this will be an element of your profile that might offset other elements.

By all means, you should be applying in the regular decision round. Be sure to spend time on your essay that addresses your leadership skills that might be compelling to an application reader.

I’d say BC is a high target school for you. It’s a Jesuit school, so over 2100 hours of CS carries a lot of weight. I go to the best Jesuit high school in SoCal, so we have a 65% acceptance rate to BC. Maybe their standards for my school is a little bit lower, but coming out of my school you would be a guaranteed acceptance into BC. I’m sure you’ll get in

well coming from a jesuit school i can tell you that the society of jesus really embraces all religions. I have a jesuit father at my school who teaches World Religions and Comparative Theology, the most popular theology classes. They focus a little less on the hardcore jesus stuff and a lot on spirituality. in other words, I dont think being Jewish should hurt your chances :)
