BC natural sciences

Does BC have a good/reputable science dept?; like biology, chemistry, neuroscience, premed, etc. I know i want to go into the sciences, but i dont know specifically what yet. I am also looking at Lehigh, which i know has an amazing science program.

BC’s Organic Chem program was ranked extremely high in USNews most recent report. But, I would suggest that Lehigh does not have an “amazing” science program. Nearly 60% of its students are in Eng or business. Look on IPEDS and you’ll see the bio-sci program is relatively small, (at least in comparison to colleges that do have a strong bio-sci program). However, basic bio is well, basic bio, and ANY college can do that well, including premed.

BC’s neuro program is more psych-based, whereas Lehigh’s program is more physical-science based. If the hard sciences appeal more to you, Lehigh might be a better fit.

BC Biology and Chemistry are highly regarded programs, and BC caters to those that want to investigate different sciences before focussing on one track. That also means you have to take more non-science courses that expand your horizons than perhaps at other schools. So you don’t have as much time to schedule pure science classes that you may be more interested in. You don’t declare a major until sophomore year. If you want to study bio-chem, however, your schedule is pretty much filled in. Its grueling.

Pre-med is also highly regarded and BC spends a lot of effort on guiding you in the right direction. Just about every one is on the pre-med track (its not a separate major), which some say distracts from pure science study and discussion as grades are most important to many students.

The science program carries a demanding work load, as labs just take loads of your time without graduation credit. You will have an equivalent of a 5 class workload to your peer’s 4 class.

BC is focused more on teaching than research… but it is a highly regarded science program, as is most of BC’s programs.
