BC - party/social scene?

I just finished visiting BC for admitted students day and I’m a little concerned about the social scene. Not sure if it was just the atmosphere and show for today, but the vibe definitely seemed pretty academic and serious. I’ve read a few posts that have said the party scene isn’t much until senior year and I’m wondering if BC is still fun for underclassman? I don’t want crazy party, but I definitely want there to be parties and fun available.

I’m also asking since I am trying to choose between BC and UVA. I haven’t visited UVA in a while but I get the feeling that it might be more fun than BC.

BC is academic and serious. There are also parties. All 4 years. Don’t worry.

This is feedback from freshman parent talking with the student and feedback from a partner at work who has a UVA senior. And having spent time in both areas.

And this is all a generalization, there are different groups and options at every school.

Boston much more to offer for arts culture and sports. More schools to go to for parties and the like. That’s a common weekend option for freshman. MIT Bu and this weekend they went to Brandeis. On campus is small dorm style get togethers. If you’re into movies and hanging out it’s fun.

The newton campus students seem to have a bit more dorm life fun although the trade off is the bus. Lower campus is quiet.

Tailgates are great and beanpot coming up.

This weekend and next are two retreats for freshman one on cape cod called 48 hours and the other a women’s mentorship retreat. If that sort of experience with other students is interesting to you. That’s fun for sure.

You have to join clubs. You meet a lot of friends there.

Now UVA according to the friend. Very serious too. But they have opportunities for more traditional college parties as a first year based on us comparing notes. Centered around frats. The frats and sororities definately have a social structure and pecking order. But there are lots to choose from and options.

So both super academic schools and both can be really fun. Probably with weather advantage and Greek life. For first years, UVA would be a solid b+ and BC feels like a b. Junior and senior year it could flip.

I’m a sophomore- trust me, there are plenty of party’s and fun to be had, in and around campus. Tons of restaurants and bars just outside of campus and the city of Boston is 5-10 minutes away…

To state the obvious: College town or big city ? New England climate or mild climate ?

One line of thought is that Boston will be there the rest of your life as a major city with lots of jobs & internships.

I’m a freshman and I probably over did it my first semester. I’m resetting this spring. There is definitely no lack of parties. I got in with the soccer club and I met a few friends that could get me in to the mod parties. And there’s always a party on football weekends. I wouldn’t worry about the social scene, it’s alive and well. Good luck. Boston’s a great town. I went over to northeastern last night for a party with friends. It’s easy to get around town. I spend most of my time on the BC campus. And between classes, basketball, working out, parties and sleeping, it’s your typical college campus.

My high school senior girl visited her sophmore BC sister this weekend for admitted eagles day. She spent Saturday night at Walsh Hall and was a bit overwhelmed with the amount of partying that was going on.
My sophomore daughter is a serious student but enjoys letting off steam. Never heard a complaint about a lack of social scene.

Both colleges have plenty of social activity. Both have excellent academics, with a focus on liberal arts education.

Is cost a factor? Are you install for UVa?

Au contraire, pb; two words: The Mods!

OOS for UVA

I’m just trying to get a feel for which school is best academically and socially. Obviously both are great schools so it’s a tough decision

You are blessed to have such great choices. You have some time to make your decision so your in a great position.

Personally, a huge fan of UVa, but I also believe that very few publics are worth paying OOS fees. (Of course, UVa is a rare public that offers OOS finaid.) To me, for a similar amount of $, or perhaps a little more, a private Uni offers much better overall value.

Speaking for BC, I wouldn’t say you can’t have fun your first couple years. Joining clubs is the easiest way to get into parties, or if you know upperclassmen. Even without that a lot of people go out to nearby schools like MIT and BU for their frat parties. It does require a little more effort on your part as a freshman but after that, it gets a lot easier. Lower campus is thriving with parties from Thursday through Saturday. As someone who didn’t know a single person here before I got here, I’ve still had a healthy social life. I went to MIT last weekend, the first week of the spring semester a few seniors in one of the clubs I was involved with had a party and with the Beanpot and the Superbowl coming up this weekend there’s no shortage of places to go. I definitely would not discount BC due to a lack of a social scene.

I’m also split between BC and UVA! Waiting on a couple reaches but it looks like this is gonna be the choice. I actually had similar concerns about BC… lots of students in the library over the weekend which can be nice, but I definitely want to make sure there’s more to do

Party at MIT Sat. SuperBowl party on floor Sunday. Beanpot hockey at Garden was last night. BC winner over Harvard. And Patriots parade with 1mm other people today. Duke versus BC on campus this week.

D and her friends had plenty of fun the past few days.

I went to party at Northeastern Friday and Saturday. Then Super Bowl party here Sunday night. Calc2 exam Monday. Had to miss Beanpot game Monday because had to study for Bio exam today. But not going to miss this coming Mondays beanpot final against Northeastern. I’m much better this semester, my first semester I found way too many parties. You’ll love it here. I’m a pre-med so I’m pretty excited about the hospitals in Boston. I’m from Florida but really want to live and have my career in Boston, that was one of my main draws here. Good luck with your decisions
