Hi everyone! I’m currently having trouble deciding between Brandeis and Boston College. I’m currently looking into a Bio major and going on the PreMed route, however I’m also thinking of economics. My gut is telling me to choose Boston College, but there is a difference in financial aid that kind of deters me from making a choice. At Brandeis, I would have to pay somewhere around $24,000/year whereas at BC I would have to pay $32,000/year. I know that Undergrad isn’t as important when pursuing a career as a doctor. But, I really liked BC because of the atmosphere, beautiful campus, great food, etc. I just feel like I might have a better experience at BC and that it has better name recognition. I know that these are somewhat superficial details, but I feel like they would all contribute to a better overall college experience. However, at Brandeis, I think I might have better relationships with faculty since its smaller and better research opportunities since I was also admitted into the LSC. The issue is that I liked Brandeis, but loved BC. Is the extra $32,000 in 4 years worth it? What should I do?
“Name recognition” isn’t important in med school applications. What IS important are your grades, MCAT scores and medically related research/ECs. Go where you think you can excel. Remember, med school is very expensive; the most common advice regarding med school is go where it’s cheapest to lessen your overall student debt.
Another thing to keep in mind: MOST premeds change their minds once the reality hits of how hard and long the medical path is. So pick a school with the greatest number of majors/opportunities/ease in changing majors.
Name recognition aside, I wouldn’t regard BC as academically stronger than Brandeis, however:
“but loved BC”
Many students do not have the opportunity to choose a college they truly love. Attach significant weight to this factor.
