I know BU is known to be a very good college, but in my area it is known to be for someone who couldn't quite get into BC...

In what ways is BU better than BC? Is it at all? Or is constantly in BC's shadow?

i was trying to be open minded...but i can not find bu's advantage over bc..
sports bc>>>>>>>>>>>>bu
academic bc>bu
location bc=bu
reputation bc>=bu

i know....

I'm in NJ, and at my HS BC is also considered > BU.

Kids go to BU who can't get into BC

Music: BU > BC

BC is large and catholic, at times overwhelmingly so to many people.

If that's what you're looking for, then apply. BU isn't religious, slightly easier to get into, and has more work experience opportunities. I visited both, and people were generally happier at BU. It isn't really like BC at all, other than the similar names.

BU has less prestige than BU. But I'd hardly consider BU a less selective alternative when they're not entirely comparable. If you'd like to go to BC in the first place, then I'd imagine your match/safety schools would be much different than BU, at least if you're going for the same atmosphere.

BC safeties would be more like Fordham or Villanova.

The only great thing BU has going for it is location.

Aside from that, it seems sort of mediocre. There are a few stand out programs (such as history), but as a whole, I don't think the education is worth the tution. Just my opinion.

I agree with the last poster though. If you like BC, try to find safeties and matces that are actually similar to it. Lehigh comes to mind.

BC is a much better value. For the same price or even less than BU, you get smaller classes, more prestige, and a better education.

50k for a university with class sizes comparable to a state university... BU is not worth it.

There are a lot of other reasons for going to Boston College instead of BU, but that is the one that stands out most in my mind.

Why compare schools which are so different? They should not be on the same list. Sure they are both in Boston but man they are very very different things and you should not select either one because of Boston.

Dude, just because they're both in Boston, it doesn't mean that they're both similar!

location, size, "feel"...all very different. even the sports emphases are different-- BC's huge for football, BU's big on hockey. there are a LOT of colleges in Boston...just because these are often confused with each other doesn't mean they're comparable.

BC is also great for ice hockey--they've been to the Frozen Four in '06 and
'07, losing in the championship game each time (sigh!)

You really have to look at both, as they are definitely different--the type of campus, the size, some of the curriculum, etc. You should determine what it is you are interested in studying, and see which program suits you better. A visit to both would be optimal, if you can get to Boston to do that.

The religious factor isn't necessarily a deal-breaker for non-Catholics--there are many students with different religious affiliations at BC. Our D is our "least Catholic" child, didn't participate in any of the religious extra-curriculars, and absolutely loved BC! She just graduated in May, and is working nearby--loves going to football games, and over to the campus to see profs, friends who are still there, etc.

Boston University just announced a quite ambitious fund-raising and academic expansion plan.

i'm from boston so i know everything about my town. bc is a better school for every reason. its being called a "new ivy". its got ecxelent academics not to mention #2 football team in the country as well as other top athletics. its on a nice campus in the west end of boston, chestnut hill. its settled down and more relaxed. while BU on the other hand is just one street. its a street with academic buildings and dorms. there is no campus, its a street that has everything. theres no sense of community at all. everyone of my friends who went there said it was a bad decision. sure the academics are known well (communications) but other than that BU isnt the greatest place unless you are completely ready for the hustle and bustle of downtown boston (which many students grown tired of)

if you got a 3.65+ go for BC trust me. BC is the place to go

I really can't see a way to compare them. Different campuses, different styles, different sports emphasis, different sizes. Different kinds of colleges in general. Actually, VERY different kinds colleges in general. I think just because they have similar names by no means indicates similarities in anything else.

I visited both, and people were generally happier at BU.
uh, no. I know a lot of people from both schools and people from BU generally did like it there...

BU has a lot of great programs and a great reputation. Also, there are plenty of BU kids who got into BC and even more prestigious schools (one of the kids in my hall got into Harvard, but picked BU because he got a full ride and couldnt afford Harvard). BU has a lot of strengths, but that being said, I'm not entirely happy here.

bob - Nice. I just mentioned the impression I received from talking to people, and I'm pretty sure that's not going to change. I did not talk to everyone -the people you talked to said differently, as did B05T0N.

I bet that kid didn't go on college confidential... He didn't apply for financial aide?

BU is in the heart of the city.
BC is in a suburb at the edge of the city
