BC vs. Cornell

Here's the issue...I'm a GT who's planning on going to Cornell next year. Right now, I'm in the honors program (top 5%) at Boston College and did very well first semester (3.9). My dad doesn't want me to transfer because he doesn't see a reason since I'm doing so well at my current school even though he accepts the fact that it's ultimately my choice. I know how hard it is to do well GPA-wise as a pre-med student at Cornell (since my brother, who's also pre-med, goes there). So my question is...

3.9 with a 30+ MCAT score at Boston College, or 3.3-3.5 with a slightly higher MCAT (since I figure that Cornell would probably better prepare me) at Cornell?

First of all, your GPA predictions don't make sense. A 3.9 BC student wouldn't get a 3.3 at Cornell. He/she will probably get a 3.7 or higher. I did Cornell as a premed and frankly it wasn't that tough. Many of my med school classmates have much better study habits than me and a few even said that undergrad for them was tougher than med school (I can't say that about Cornell).

Ultimately, if you're happy at BC, then there's no reason to transfer. But, don't be afriad to transfer in fear that your GPA will somehow be lower at Cornell. It probably won't be.

I don't think that your GPA will be a 3.3 at Cornell; however, I disagree with norcalguy about Cornell premed not being tough. You have to put in a lot of study time and have a great work ethic in order to get a 3.9 at Cornell. How much do you study for a test at BC? The majority of students at Cornell put in a LOT of time studying and reading and doing homework (don't worry, they still party a lot too), and some classes can be very time consuming. I'm sure you know this though because you mentioned that your brother goes to Cornell.

Personally, I think that you should transfer unless you are really happy at BC. You might have to work a little harder to maintain that GPA though.

Are you happy at BC?

Why would you like to transfer to Cornell? Are there any specific opportunities that excite you about Cornell?

It's not that I'm unhappy at BC, I'm just not in love with it. I want a more diverse student body and want to feel more challenged because right now, I don't think the education I'm receiving is quite worth the $50,000 a year price tag. Also, Cornell has been my dream school since middle school AND if I go to Cornell I'll be paying about $20,000/year less because I'm a NYS resident and will be in CALS. Ultimately, the only drawback that I see in transferring is going from Boston to Ithaca (which isn't even that big of a deal).

I chose Cornell over BC. When I visited BC, I thought that the student body was way too homogenous and I didn't really see myself having the same types of opportunities. And the reduced tuition is going to be a big help. I say definitely transfer, just be prepared to put in more study time, but you can talk to other students to find out which classes will be a GPA booster.

i would time your transfer so that you've already taken most of the tougher intro courses...

and can enjoy cornell's unique upper level courses.

i think toughness depends on # of hours you put in it to do well! if majority of cornell peeps put a LOT of time in school work, then its tough!
