hi,
i had chosen BC over 4 other schools (NYU, Carnegie, BU Sargent College, and USC)… but I heard from GWU today (who had waitlisted me for their 7 year med program)
now i’m in a dilemma…
I really want to become a doctor and the program at GWU strongly provides that opportunity for me as I just need to maintain a certain GPA without taking the MCAT to earn my degree.
However, I feel that I would have a more collegiate experience at BC. I was planning to go pre-med at BC and take the MCAT eventually, but a lot of people around me told me how hard it is to get into med school these days, and will be even more so by the time i have to prepare and take the MCAT. Is this true?
Is it going to be even harder and harder in the future to get into med school?
do you think it is worth it to give up a potential better “college experience” at BC for a guaranteed spot at med school?
I really need all your help!

If you are a talented enough math and science student to be admitted to the joint degree program at GW, you will certainly get into medical school. YOu may want to consider the early admission to Tufts program where BC students get admitted during their sophomore year and do not have to take the MCAT.

Bottom line: go where you are going to be the happiest. If you are going to med school you will have 8 grueling years (school + residency) after college, so while BC will be challenging, it will also provide enough fun to last you through.

ssjay- My son chose BC and will be a biology major/ premed. He also was accepted at GW but not the 7 year program. How could you give up the opportunity of a 7 year premed program at GW? From everyone he met in DC over the summer, the college experience in DC is fantastic, you are practically down the street from the White House and Georgetown is right around the corner!
I am thrilled with my son's choice of BC, I love everything about the school, campus, surrounding area, Boston and so does he. But you have been offered a guaranteed spot at a top med school, I think you should take it and I think you will also have an awesome college experience in DC! Good Luck to you and congratulations!

I have a friend who just transferred here to BC from GW...and she loves it here. If you are smart enough to be admitted to the seven year program, you will get into med school coming out of BC. 91 percent of BC students with a 3.2 GPA or higher and 9.0 MCAT or higher were admitted to at least one accredited med school, which is TWICE the national average. Case in point - you are probably smart (you got in here and at GW), and look at those stats...you'll get in to med school. Go to BC and get the college experience that only comes around once in your life!!

id say go to BC, even if i didnt have my obvious bias. those 7 year bio/med programs are INTENSE. yeah you dont have to apply to med school, but you dont get the full undergrad experience either. like xcjimmy said, BC is an excellent school for premed so you would have no problem getting into a good med school.

my brother is in his first year of med school right now. when he was applying to colleges he ONLY applied to schools with 7-year med programs. he got into most of the schools (i think every one except penn) but only into the final round of the 7-year for one of them. he wound up going to the college of nj (imo, the best public school in NJ, well respected in our area) and majored in bio w/ a minor in chem. looking back now he is most happy that he didnt get into the 7-year program because his classes were demanding enough as they were and he still got to enjoy undergrad. but he says if he could do it again he wouldnt apply to only schools with 7-year progams because he wishes he went to more of a party/social school. his frat got kicked off campus jr year so he wasnt happy about that at all.

so i say go to BC! enjoy undergrad and get more of a "traditional" experience. from what i know about GW, the campus is more integrated into the city. my other brothers girlfriend went there and really enjoyed it but she said there wasnt much school spirit. definetly the opposite at bc. everyone loves the eagles and sports
