Hi everyone, Im going to be a senior next year and as a Junior, I'm taking Pre-Calculus. Im doing very well in Pre-Calc and have done well in all my math classes. I am not technically a math person; unlike some people, I really do need to study to do well. So, do you think it's possible to go straight from Pre-Calculus Honors to AP Calc BC, skipping AB? Thanks!!!

Some schools offer AB to good math students and BC to the top math students. Other schools have students take AB one year and BC the next. It varies from school to school. You might talk to the teacher who teaches BC and you might also consider which class has the best teacher if different people teach the two classes at your school.

I might be a little careful about how strongly you consider that last piece of advice. I’m a BC teacher at a school where the kids absolutely fear the AB teacher. While it’s certainly possible to go from precalculus to BC at many schools, as MD Mom said, you should probably make your decision independently of who may be teaching the two courses, and only maybe use the “who’s teaching it” as a tiebreaker of sorts. I’ve had some students who quite honestly were better suited for AB who took BC out of fear who are suffering quite badly.

I would agree with TheMathProf and I was not as clear as I could have been. I do not think that there is a problem in skipping AB if you have top math skills and enjoy math. I also do not think there is a problem with taking AB especially if the AB teacher is the better teacher. My post was clouded by bias because the BC teacher at my son’s school is not a teacher you would want to have.

Our school only does BC, so all Pre-Calculus students go straight to Calc BC.
