Be blunt: Is International Studies a useless major?

Honesty is the best policy!

Depends on what you mean by useless, but I would say objectively no. If you’re interested in any kind of career in which you will be interacting with global/international populations (through business, NGOs, volunteer work, education, etc.) then it can be very useful. That could be anything from working in international business to being a foreign service officer to working in the study abroad office of a university.

However, if you’re asking if it’s going to get you a job - well, that depends on you. It doesn’t lend itself to a neat career progression like a major in engineering or accounting would, but if you do internships and learn employer-desired skills, you’ll be in a better position.

it is a waste, from a jobs perspective. if you like politics then maybe minor in it. if you want a sure thing major in nursing or pharmacy.

There is no such thing as a sure thing. Right now, many nurses and pharmacists can’t find jobs.

OP, International Studies major is like most liberal arts majors: it doesn’t prepare you for a specific career, the way, for example, a degree in finance or engineering does. It’s a fine major if you’re interested in the field. If you take it seriously and study hard it can be a fine entry into grad schools. But like literature, history etc., it doesn’t necessarily lead to a good job after graduation.

It’s definitely not a useless major. This is the age of globalization and plenty of firms value knowledge of the world. Just because it is not a “sure thing” (no major really is) does NOT mean it is a “useless” major. It has uses.
