Be cautious when giving essays to others

Occasionally essays given to another CC member in good faith disappear just like that. Concerns have risen over the possibility of certain essays being plagarized or stolen. Ideally an essay should not be of any use to anyone other than to the writer, because the essay is supposed to be personal and tells about YOU. But to minimise the risk of essays being stolen, there're several precautions that, in my opinion, can help.

For those giving essays:
First of all, whenever you want to post request for essays to be read by CC friends, be aware that they will always be a possibility that your essays get stolen. If you are not comfortable with that risk, don't post a request. When giving essays, be selective in choosing whom to give it to. For instance, a new member (0-100 posts) offers to read your essay. Check his/her other posts, and if you see that 60% - 80% of those other posts is about offering to read essays, be very suspicious. You might be dealing with a random thief.

Another way is to look around for other posters who have given their essays out. Ask them which poster gives a response (i.e s/he actually proofread the essay(s) and offered constructive comments). More often than not they will be happy to recommend essay readers to you. Pay attention to those who often receive and never reply. These are the posters you might want to avoid. Again, don't be too hasty and conclude that every poster who doesn't reply is a thief. Some of them may not have the time, etc. Use your judgment. :)

When you post a request, sometimes 20 people can offer to read your essay. Usually I wouldn't recommend letting 20 people to edit your essay, becasue your voice may be lost amidst all the editing. Choose several and stop at that. Current college students are a good bet. There're plenty of current students around who are extremely helpful. After all, they were once in your shoes.

If you have the time, get to know other posters first before you start giving essays. I didn't give any of my essays until I had about 900 posts; enough for me to know the CC members here. Also, thank the people who so kindly read your essay and give comments. They'll be much happier to help you in the future, or help others. CC rule: Be nice. :)

For those receiving essays:
If you do not have the time to comment, politely let the sender know that. Don't just ignore the message. If you plan to edit it later, then tell him/her that, and REALLY edit it later. Try not to receive too many essays unless you don't have a deadline to meet. You might raise unnecessary suspicions.

Also, you might want to consider letting the poster know which school(s) are you applying to. That way the sender can decide whether to give you his/her essays or not. Of course, s/he may ultimately decide against giving you the essay, but if you're not looking to steal essays, you wouldn't mind, will you? ;) But even so, at least you've established a reputation of honesty in the board. People tend to favor honesty.

Ultimately, even if we take all the necessary precautions, there may be times where an essay gets stolen somewhere. If that's the case, then it certainly can't be helped. Take it as a lesson. This board is all about trust in each other, so only give essays if you have that level of trust. :)

Im really nervous because I posted a request for people to lookover my Why Northwestern essay, and i sent it to just about everyone who responded. A lot of those people did not comment back, and now that I look back on them they were indeed people with fewer than a 100 posts whose posts were mostly about proofreading others' essays. im positive some of these people were essay thieves, and i seriously hope they dont use my essay. is there anything i should do right now to ensure that Northwestern knows i didnt plagiarize the essay? should i call the admissions office and alert them of what has happened? i dont know what to do!! man, everything has gotta be perfect, i cant hav something stupid like that screw me over.

well, you can't tell Northwestern a thing like that. firstly, you don't have evidence that they stole your essay. secondly, you don't know if they're applying to NW. and if your essay is really good and personal, northwestern will know that, too.

right now, there's nothing much you can do. i'm sorry to hear that. but you can always go back and re-polish your essay and personalize it, because after all, the essay is about you. if you do a good job, which i expect you will, northwestern will appreciate it.

omg, thank you for posting this. I've read the post that said not to post essays directly, but i'd have never thought of the need to be careful about pm'ing or emailing people without your comments.
Hm, if i've only pm/email'd it to about three people before this, i should be okay, right? Two of them responded and one i'm a little uncertain about...But thank you for pointing all of that out. It's so easy to be trusting of the internet.

Banedon, thanks.

is it wrong to read essays to see what others ar writing? i'm not planning on stealing anyone's ideas, but it's nice to see how my own essays stack up against other people's (while commenting back, of course).

Maybe the mods could sticky this post (or add the information in it to the already existing sticky on posting essays)? Seems that a lot of people have been asking for essay help lately, and may not have been thinking of possible consequences.

Mods? Sticky?

givlupi, I suppose it's okay to use other people's essays as inspiration while you help correct them. However, to use them for comparison reason...each person writes differently. Different styles, different level of excellency. It can be a bit depressing reading actual essays in the books published about essay tips and whatnot. And sometimes it's a little hard to see how your essay would fare to somebody else's if it's not even the same question.

Hmmm... I would just get the class one to two years ahead of you. This way, they wouldn't really use it, since they are already in college.

they'd be the best people to ask, really. but if they're busy with college work you will just have to go for the second best.

Completely agree with Banedon. I never gave my essay out to anyone apart from parents, college students or the likes, who cant plaigerize.

May I also add that when someone does take the time and trouble to comment on an essay that you have sent to them, it's the polite thing to do to acknowledge the courtesy with a thank you. After 600 words about how wonderful you are, I'm a little doubtful if you can't even take ten seconds out of your life to write "thanks" -- it's only six letters.

banedon .. one thing .. though ..many here seriously are busy with app and school work yet wann aread and help.....

for such ppl....... dont take many essays and tell the ones u take that it may be a little late...

for such senders;;;; well even if u get a lte reply ..the person will be genuine ..and u get atleast some response frm him

1Down2togo and smartmind, i've mentioned those too. :) But thanks for the effort, and please add if you have any other opinions. Hopefully this will help CCers be more careful.

if the mods are reading this, be wary of lqvolleyball...im pretty sure he stole a bunch of people's essays the other night (sunday?).....

!@#$

I completely agree. I've edited some essays (well actually a lot in my time), and I've only given out my own essay to 2 VERY trusted people who were parents. Just be careful, because not everyone on here is nice

I admit it...I stole your essay, grateful bhikku.....
Hey, free country, right?

"Only you can prevent forest fires."
-Smokey the Bear

indeed.......

Very good post, and an important lesson for people.

Even though I have fewer then 100 posts (switched screennames), I offer to read the occasional essay and basically post in the transfer forum.

I also think that people shouldn't rely on CCers as their only editors. Bring it to at least one english teacher to check grammar and such.

"Very good post, and an important lesson for people."

Thanks, I'm quite flattered......

Banedon, impressive-weh.
