Be honest: Are there a lot of druggies at Cal?

<p>Okay, so I've heard so many great things about Berkeley and can't wait to tour the school.
Hopefully I'll get in even though I am no where close to perfect (please go to the chances thread, I'd really appreciate any input). Anyway, everyone pretty much knows about the 1960s culture Berkeley has been known for. Although it is very competitive to get into Berkeley, I hear there are still a lot of "stupid" (relative term of course) druggies at Berkeley. I also hear there is a majority of students there who are promiscuous and would rather hook up than get in relationships. I heard some stats saying 1/4 of Berkeley students had herpes.</p>

<p>Is this true? What do you think of the general Cal Student body in aspects of drug use/ promiscuity? Are they really just a bunch of smart but immature college kids?</p>

<p>I can’t talk about Cal in general, but I know a lot of people in different years pretty well, and only a very small minority of them could be considered anything close to promiscuous – and those people are easy to avoid. I know only one pothead. And I know a lot of people looking for legit relationships.</p>

<p>It really depends on the group you run with. Maybe I just hang out with too many goody-goody Asian kids. :P</p>

<p>I’ve never heard of a huge population of druggies and promiscuous students at Cal from my friends who go there. Although, I’m pretty sure there are quite a few druggies at any school, but you usually won’t see them unless you go out of your way.</p>

<p>That happens on any college campus. I wouldn’t say there’s a disproportionate number of druggies at Cal though. I haven’t even been offered weed yet, haha.</p>

<p>Okay, this is good to know… I really didn’t like the environment I have been hearing about. Drugs are inevitable, but I don’t want to attend a university where the majority of the student body are immature college kids, smart as they may be.</p>

<p>Any more input? How about promiscuity?</p>

<p>Actually that’s what i hear is the reason that causes it… people are so busy with coursework they don’t have time to commit to relationships so they just fool around a lot.</p>

<p>Hahah. I had this discussion with my instructor on Monday, since he’s been in Berkeley since the ‘70s. He was commenting on the same thing: Cal students aren’t known for anything crazy. One of the grad students’ sections had students absolutely flabbergasted by an off-handed comment a visiting speaker made about his hard drug use. They had all sorts of questions like, “Did he really do all those drugs??” and “Where did he get them?” and “WHY?”</p>

<p>Cal is very, very straight-laced compared to its '60s hey-day, but it’s still a large college campus and you’ll find your fair share of any group you’re looking for. Just know that promiscuity/excessive-drug use is not the norm here.</p>

<p>Hmm, yeah, I know a handful of promiscuous people, but they aren’t necessarily the studious types… Most people are good, I think.</p>

<p>From my observations I have noticed that most (Not all) of the people who do not do drugs tend to be Asian and we know that Cal has a lot of Asians so put two and two together. Many people I know, including me, do drugs, but Its mostly just weed and alcohol not really much hard stuff.</p>

<p>I’ll speak for me and my (predominantly white) friends – no drinking, no drugs. Not teetotalers about it, but not our scene. Different majors, too, from hard sciences to soft humanities.</p>

<p>Seems like a lot of people on this board complain a lot about Asians. Almost every time someone mentions Asians, it is usually to point out something negative.</p>

<p>Asians are cool. :] They’re usually smart, got some cool beats, interesting fashion trends, and can’t forget anime! :] aha</p>

<p>I feel like people who are part of the frat scene may be more into that sort of thing. My friends in frats tell me some really disgusting promiscuity stories >.> and then there was that one time my friend went to a frat party where all he did was take one drink and come back acting like he was on LSD or something.</p>

<p>Yeahh. Not that it’s representative of all sorority girls, but the most promiscuous girls I know happen to be in the social sororities. I had a friend whose roommate frequently brought guys back to their dorm room to do the naughty, sometimes even forgetting their names. This roommate also became friends with another girl because they hooked up with the same guy. Some of the pre-professional ones seem a bit better.</p>
