Be Honest--Should I apply to SIPA now or in a few years????

Hello! So, the average age is 26-27...for graduate students in SIPA

I'm going to be 22 when I graduate from George Washington University
and I'm not sure if I should wait a few years to build up my resume or
apply right away.

I'm graduating with 2 majors...IR and Russian Language and Literature.
I've interned at State and done research for a Fulbright Scholar...as well
as worked throughout my undergrad career in the Government (National Archives)...
I have a 3.2 however, but very good extracurricular activities (leadership) and
recommendations (including from people important in International affairs)....

Should I apply....or do I need more work experience??

PLEASE LET ME KNOWWWWWW---I don't want to waste time/money if I don't
honestly stand a chance to get in.

Thanks

Hi kristall,

How is your GRE? This isn’t phenomenally important, but it could help your application if you have a lower-end GPA and are quite young.

I thought only two years of post-grad work experience not directly related to IR wouldn’t get me in the top schools, but it has, so you never know. If you apply this fall, you’ll be entering with one year of work experience. SAIS and Woodrow Wilson might not take you – they’re pickier about work experience – but you’d have a shot at the others if you’ve got a great GRE and write a good essay, I think.

Why SIPA specifically? I think they’re pickier about work experience, too, so I’d say you wouldn’t have a great chance of getting in there.

Hi thanks for your answer!

I’m just wondering what counts as work experience…I’ve been in relevent jobs for 3 years now while going to school—do they want exectutive positions at different places for you to be competitive? Would internships not count for as much?

I’m going to be applying to SAIS, SIPA, G-town, GWU, Tufts, and USC
