Be Honest

Hi,
I was wondering if you guys could give me an honest opinion (based on the limited amount of info here) whether or not I could get into Yale. I am going to be a senior.

STATS
GPA: 3.95
SAT: 2220
Math Level 2: 790, World History: 700
AP Statistics: 4, AP World History: 5
(Also took AP Chemistry and AP Calc AB, but I had a medical leave starting at the end of April so I couldn't take AP exams or SAT Subject Tests.)

EXTRACURRICULARS
-piano: first place in Sonata competition, six-time state semi-finalist, play piano at local nursing homes
-dance/ballet: Senior Company member, teach Chinese folk dance at Chinese school, performed in six Global Festivals
-Editor-in-Chief of school paper
-flute: All-State Band, District Honors Band, first chair in school band
-raised $1,000 by organizing a benefit concert for Haiti
-National Honor Society
-PALs
-student council treasurer
-worked at Mathnasium Learning Center as a math instructor for a year until it closed

You would seem to have a reasonable chance.

Of course, with acceptance rates of 10%, and with everyone being a top applicant, it is kind of a crapshoot.

My brother’s kid got perfect SAT scores 5 years ago. He got into Yale, but not Harvard, and not Princeton.

That’s a heck of a rounding system you have. This year’s overall acceptance rate was 7.4% and the RD rate was even lower at 5.7%.;)

To be honest I doubt it but if you EA it youll have a much better chance…yet you might want to apply elsewhere early since its SC

I would say that the difference between a 10% acceptance rate and a 7% acceptance rate is inconsequential.

Not true. SCEA application to Yale confers no admissions advantage. The higher admit rate reflects the differences in the SCEA and RD application pools. Over and over the Dean of Admissions has said that no one gets in SCEA who would not get in RD. The consensus on the Stanford CC boards is that SCEA there actually hurts your admissions chances. Time will tell what advantage, if any, is seen with Harvard or Princeton SCEA.

You have pretty decent EC’s but your GPA and test scores may not be high enough. This past year admissions for selective schools was really brutal. We saw kids with perfect SAT’s, valedictorian, great EC’s get rejected from HYPMS. It really is a crap shoot for everyone unless you are an unusual URM, come from an obscure part of the country or have a great hook.

That being said, you can’t get in if you don’t apply!

Good luck!!

What’s your rank? Is your GPA unweighted?

Nothing’s impossible, and since Princeton and Harvard are opening up to SCEA applicants again, there will likely be less applicants applying to Yale early. You may get lucky, but most don’t.
