Be mean, break my heart!

Any response would be WILDLY APPRECIATED. I have a weird GPA/SAT combination. D:

Very Competitive Public School, Graduating Class is around 900 each?

Stats:

GPA: 3.69~3.72 UW (No reason or excuse. I’m just stupid. D: )
4.03 W
4.30 UC Weighted (The bulk of my bad grades were in my freshman year. :X)

SAT: 800 CR/ 800M/ 800W (Two sittings. Best single sitting: 2360)
SATIIs: BioM 790 MathIIC 760 Lit 780
ACT: N/A
APs: Biology 5, Chemistry 4, USH 5, Language/Composition 5, Calculus AB 4
Most Rigorous Courseload, etc
School doesn’t rank!

Other stuff:

Essay: It’ll probably be reasonably good, but I’m not sure yet. :< I’m pretty sure I’ll make it unique though.
Recommendations: Above average, but probably nothing special. I might ghostwrite a rec from the law office I interned for over the summer. I think that one will be a good one.
Hooks: I’m not sure if this is a hook, but my family makes over 100k a year. However, like a lot of this goes towards supporting my mentally challenged uncle, (his apartment, treatment, medication, etc) so we never actually get financial aid but we’re still poor. D:

ECs:

-Speech and Debate, 4 yrs, 1st place in district in numerous events and 2009 California State Champion in Congressional Debate, might be the topic of my college essay because our school doesn’t do national debate so I went to the tournaments myself with my own money and qualified for the tournament of champions ettttttc

Schools:

UCLA, UC Berkeley, Duke, Brown (ED), UChicago, Georgetown, Yale, Penn, Columbia

I think that’s about it. I know I’m aiming high. :|

What’s your class rank? You should clearly be in at the UC’s but your GPA does not look to be top 10% which would make the ivies highly unlikely.

My school doesn’t rank, thankfully. :</p>

It doesn’t work that way. At ivies, when schools don’t rank, they figure out a rank for you based on school profile, historical data from your school and information your counselor provides. They will know whether you’re val, top 2%, top 5% or top 10% with only a small margin of error.

Oh, that’s a bummer. :<

Well, my school (Arcadia, if you’ve heard of it?) is really competitive and grades are deflated, so I think I still might have a chance of being in top 10%. But otherwise, what about some of the other privates?

dude, don’t be so pessimistic about your grades. a 3.7 means you’re averaging only one or two Bs per grading period, which is very good considering a competitive school and likely rigourous courseload.

all of those are reaches. not because you’re a bad applicant, but because they’re reaches for anyone.

As long as you’re close to top 10% your scores would put you into most privates below the very top.

Oh, come on. You have an excellent chance at all kinds of colleges. Your SATs are great. I would not hesitate to apply if I were you.

You have great shots anywhere…
but, i have a quick question…
how did you go to Nats for forensics if your team doesn’t do NFLs…
did you do NCFL or NFLs(i’m familar with debate and think it wwould affect your chances)

Definitely apply to all your schools. You are difficult to chance without understanding the GPA distribution at your school, the rigor of your program, etc. All of the schools on your list will look into that and make their decisions. UChicago is usually pretty forgiving (to an extent) about GPA, placing the most weight on your essays.

I would caution you to add some safeties because I don’t think any of the schools on your list are 90% guaranteed. Add CalState or a few of the lower UCs and you should have plenty of choices.

hey rocket6louise:

i meant we don’t really do circuit tournaments like berkeley, glenbrooks, etc. i ended up going to the la costa canyon tournament and the berkeley tournament myself and secured two bids for the congress toc. in regards to nats, yeahhh can’t go without the school. D:

I think Michigan, the UCs, Princeton, and Stanford don’t look at freshman grades…just fyi.

thanks for the clarification…
im a two time national qualfier-like NFLs
and we dont do the circuit either…

North_face: I think those schools do look at freshmen year grades, its the UCs that don’t.

You have great SAT scores and yeah you should emphasize your debate stuff in your essays because you sound like youre really interested in that. I really think you have a good chance at Berkeley, they are very academic oriented and your scores definitely show that. As for UCLA, its very unpredictable, I know many people that were rejected from LA (but got into Berkeley). I think Georgetown is also a good match. I dont know about your other colleges, though…

You have a very large class, btw. 900 people in your grade is a lot!

I completely understand your GPA issue!!! I also go to a super competitive public high school, I think its even more than Arcadia, and it is really unbelievable. Sometimes I think that if everyone from my school all went to different schools not around here, they would all be first in the class. Its really degrading.

^I know for sure that Princeton and Stanford also don’t.

Be sure to explain your family’s support of your Uncle when applying for financial aid.

Good Stats. You rock kid!!

ok so your gpa isn’t perfect most colleges accept that… you’re really smart just write an awesome essay and you have a really good chance of going to the college of your choice… :)

good luck!!! ;)
