What do you feel is an adequate amount of community service hours? Are Columbia adcoms tough on that?

Thanks for reading and submitting your opinion/evalutations! I really appreciate it!

~Fraggle

Yes, Columbia admissions are that competitive. You are pretty low in SATs for Columbia. However, if you go search on the Columbia board for the admitted/rejected thread from last year, you will see that they often passed over higher level students for lower stat students. If you can raise the SATs to the 2100 range, it's worth applying.

Schools compare your SAT scores to everyone else applying to them, not to your school's average. It's a national test for a reason.

Even as a URM, your scores are very low for Columbia. There are tons of high scoring hispanics at Columbia. I would focus on great schools that have a hard time recruiting hispanics. Schools in the midwest like Grinnell, Outer NE like Bowdoin that doesn't look at SATs, etc.

Bump -- By the way, I've taken 3 SAT Practice tests over the summer and received scores of 1910, 1920, and recently 1940.

Considering:
Columbia University
Cornell University
Johns Hopkins University
New York University
Penn State University
University of Maryland

I would say John Hopkins, Columbia, and Cornell would be reaches. Try to increase your SAT's.

I think your URM status will really help...raise your SAT score and you're in
