beach cruisers at Cal

sorry guys..another silly question.

I have a pale pink beach cruiser that I am considering bringing up to Berkeley as my means of transportation to class. My question is..is a PINK beach cruiser going to look seriously out of place in Berkeley? Should I consider just buying a dumpy bike to ride to and from class and leaving the beach cruiser at my Dad's?

Bike theft is fairly common at Berkeley. If it's really expensive and you don't want to take that risk, don't bring it.

the beach cruiser will suck ass at berk

beach cruisers suck ass generally

you wont get up hills

but havin a bike is a good idea

"you wont get up hills"

It has gears

but..if theft it common..then I probably shouldn't bring it. that sucks..i hate people who steal.

AHAHA

IT DOESNT MATTER IF IT HAS GEARS

beach cruisers are not even for transportation
theyre for entertainment

they're heavy as heck
theres no way youll be able to get that around

theft isnt an issue if you use a good lock and lock the frame and front wheel

How much does a bike cost these days? (the last bike I purchased was 10 years ago).

If you think you can stand riding up steep hills on it, then bring it. Otherwise, leave it. Buses and walking are the best way around Berkeley, and that's what most people will do. Bikes are okay, but can just be inconvenient.

BTW, I just found out that somebody stole the front fork on my bike (frame was locked to the front wheel, so someone must've planned on it and taken a wrench to it just for the fork), which is locked to a railing behind my apartment building (no street access from the rear). So yeah, I can officially say that bike theft does happen and is probably more prevalent then you think.

I'd say buy a used bike on Craigslist for cheap. Less than $100, or even $50. There is also a flea market in Ashby (one stop on the BART going south from downtown Berkeley) which you can check out. I visited it once and saw maybe 2-3 bikes in the $50-70 range, but I ended up not buying.

if it has gears, bring it, unless you really love that bike, because there is a risk of theft, unless you get a top-of-the-line lock. Otherwise you can get a very decent used bike for $100 (though it's a seller's market early in the fall term.)

the other thing is that it rains about 2-3 months out of 9, so you'd have to walk or bus in that time, but otherwise biking around Berkeley and campus is ideal.

awesome. thanks guys for your input. yeah..I really love my beach cruiser and would be heartbroken if it was stolen...it was pretty expensive.

yeah, I figured biking around Berkeley would be ideal (hence the post), especially after visiting there in June for CalSO. I will defintely look into purchasing a cheap one once I move.

p.s. i HATE THE RAIN..=(

i dont think calx is familiar with what a beach cruiser is

why cant u bike when it rains?

Biking in rain is bad if you dont have fenders because it concentrates a large amount of water to your ASS

Actually zhgiu, I am a cycling enthusiast, I have three bikes (hybrid, high-end mountain and road) and know what a beach cruiser is (riden a gearless one but I've never owned one, they're not ideal for hilly towns.)

Biking when it rains is possible but its a pain as you need to have your wet gear, hat and make sure your socks don't get soaked. You get pretty dirty too.

At Berkeley, I used to ride a good but not super-good hybrid ($350 bike) with a top-of-the-line Kryptonite U-lock. I took my road bike to climb Grizzly Peak (great ride up Walnut St) or Wildcat Canyon, and my mountain bike on Tilden Trails, but I wouldn't lock them for hours unwatched, I used my hybrid for that.

Tallkell: I would say get a cheap bike for commuting, but bring your good bike next year to ride around once you feel comfortable with your surroundings and when you aren't going to lock it for hours unwatched (provided you have the storage space for that.)

Cool..thanks for your input...greatly appreciated.

wat do u guys wear in the rain

an umbrella and some good shoes like waterproof Timberlands. It doesn't really rain that much at Berkeley (only a SoCaler would think it does), it rains just enough so that it keeps things green until the end of the schoolyear. It's nice for a change of pace.
