Beach town in Delaware

Now that I have had some wonderful advice in Rhode Island, I need to change my request to the beaches of Delaware. We are planning on going the last week of September and there are four adults and two twelve year old boys. I think we want to be able to walk to the beach and we don’t need a party town. Any suggestions on where to stay sand what to do besides the beach. Interesting day trips? Thanks again!

Rehoboth or Bethany. Day trip take the Lewes Ferry to Cape May, NJ to shop and eat. Rent bikes and ride through Cape Henlopen state park. Watch the subset in Dewey behind the Hyatt/Lighthouse Cove.

Rehoboth. @tumagmom covered it pretty well. We have friends there. We visited in July. There’s enough to do at the beach and boardwalk. You could take a ride to Assateague Island to see the horses. Have fun.

Fenwick Island was our favorite. No real large scale public beach access, so not crowded. Right on the DE/MD state line so easy access to whatever you want in Ocean City but it’s not all in your face. Our boys would go play mini-golf or drive go-carts.

Staying in Lewes, or Lewes Beach is more interesting as it is a historic village as opposed to a resort town, which in late September, will be mostly shut down and quiet.

I concur–Rehoboth is a much louder, busier place. Lewes is charming. Both are near Cape Henlopen park. If you are into biking, there is an amazing bike loop that runs from Lewes, to Henlopen, to Rehoboth, and then back to Lewes. I try every year to take my bike from North Cape May where the ferry terminal is (in my neighborhood!) to Delaware, make that loop (lunchbreak in Rehoboth) and then take the Ferry back. The ferry to Cape May is a lovely trip from Lewes.

Is scoping out the Biden’s place an option? I think they do have a place on the shore there. Only thing I can think to add is sales tax free shopping.

I’m planning to do that this fall when I do the bike path loop. It’s right off the path!

Viking Golf? Our boys loved it too years ago. Seems to still be around. Cape May- Lewes ferry -definitely very nice. And both towns are cool.

Funny, I do the opposite, taking the ferry to Cape May and ride up to Stone Harbor and back.

I drove by President Biden’s house this summer. Several times. Brain cramps for the entire family set in when trying to get pictures. I’m sure we’re on a watch list. Glad it’s my SIL’s SUV.

Liquor prices are great plus no tax. I needed some after a week with the family and some relatives.

That’s a long one. I actually usually drive up to the tip of SH and ride through it and Avalon. Or sometimes a loop through the mainland and back. The main bike path up the center of the Cape is useful but not particularly scenic–love the Delaware ones the best!

I just got back from a week in Lewes after dropping our son at college. We spent our beach days at Cape Henlopen and had wonderful dinners and even saw an outdoor concert in Lewes. Dewey Beach and Rehoboth are fun too. It’s all very close. You will enjoy the area.

When our kids were young my in-laws used to take the extended family to Delaware. The first couple of years we were in Rehobeth, but switched to Dewey Beach, I think because it was easier to walk to the water and my MIL’s favorite crab place.

I think Dewey is supposed to be a bit of a party place, but we never noticed. I think in late September it will be fine.

Mini golf, board walk, Henlopen. We always had good luck with programs given by Delaware Seashore - Delaware State Parks. One year the kids went fishing with adults who get seasick easily. They didn’t repeat that one! (I don’t but I enjoyed a day without kids instead.) Very good barbecue if you go looking.

Thank you, everyone! I am looking forward to exploring this area! And I will have to find Joe’s house!

We used to go to Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island in the summer. Both of those places were very quiet with great beaches. After a day of sun and water we would go to nearby boardwalk. They thought it was great to keep on putting quarters in to get those tickets (I was a pro at winning those games). After $20+ coins into those machines they could trade those tickets in to get few $.50 plastic necklaces, stuff animals. I remember we used to get some great Maryland crabs.

I’ve been doing Cape Henlopen State Park as my escape during the past 1.5 years. In October, it’s pretty well deserted and the weather was sunny but not hot. We’ve gone down twice on Fridays this summer and no problem with social distancing. We live about three hours away, so we can make a day trip of it. Delta pending, we may do a day trip on the ferry this fall and stay on the outdoor decks of the boat.

My secret agenda is to convince H we should move out that way – not on the beach or in Lewes, but close enough that we could get the best of both worlds.

I love that ferry! I’ve taken it a couple of times — definitely a highlight!

I can hear its horn blow from my second home which is a few blocks from the termainal, and walk down to the Terminal or the Bay to watch it. I was baby sitting my GD today, who’d been visiting us there recently, and all her little animals were playing “Taking the Ferry to Delaware.”
