Bear Bikes

can anyone comment about this business. i am considering buying their bike package for the year but I just wanted to make sure that its a good deal. anyone know if it is or not>?

It's not worth it - their rental package is/was $160/170 for the entire year, which includes a bike (a good, $250-300 bike), lock, and winter storage/tuneups. However, it's more economical to buy your own bike from Wal-Mart or Target for $60-80, and get a lock from WUPD. WUPD rents locks for $20/year, and returns that $20 when you bring the lock back. That $60-80 bike will most likely last you for a few years, and it's yours to keep. You also aren't at the mercy of Bears Bikes waiting until the 2nd week of school to deliver your bike, or having to turn your bike in early before winter break or the end of the year.

Well, unless perhaps you're my s who wouldn't be found dead on a bike from Walmart or Target :)

It's not like the Bikes say "Wal-Mart" on them... Some of the bikes at Wal-Mart are by the same big-name manufacturers that make the more expensive bikes. Even if you purchase your own bike from a bike shop for $200, it's a better deal over 4 years... much better deal.

the only problem is if i buy a bike from wal mart or target or w/e is there anywhere i could store my bike over winter break? and when i leave college to go home for the summer...a bike is a little hard to take home? i live in maryland

Bikes can be stored outside or possibly in the limited storage in the dorm (if your RA or RCD lets you) over winter break. UTrucking charges $50 or so to store a bike over the summer. I got an off-campus storage space with some friends for the summer, so we're storing stuff like that there.
