BearFacts

Undergraduate Requirements
Subject A REQUIRED
American History NOT SATISFIED
American Institutions NOT SATISFIED
American Cultures REQUIRED

I saw these at my bearfacts... i am wondering what they are. Do I need to take those classes?

Look like graduation requirements

American Cultures

I see the same thing. I know for sure that I have to take an American Cultures class, but thought the other classes were satisfied by IGETC. I hope that they are just waiting for either the IGETC certification form or final transcripts to change the status.

Where exactly do you see that information in BearFacts? Under Academic Record?

ooooooh nooooooooes i hate those kinda classes

i'm not sure if you've taken the ap us history exam or scored well on the sat II us history subject exam...those two can fulfill the history and institutions requirement...some other college courses can cover the cultures requirement...you have to fill out a student petition:

<a href="http://academic-senate.berkeley.edu/committees/amcult/AmCult_StudentPetition_Feb2008.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://academic-senate.berkeley.edu/committees/amcult/AmCult_StudentPetition_Feb2008.pdf</a></p>

Subject A is related to the reading and composition requirement. You can satisfy that by passing a writing test that they administer in May and August. Basically you have to do it if your writing score on the writing component of your SAT test was below 680. Taking and passing that writing placement test will then allow you to sign up for any reading and composition course. But if you would rather not, then you can just take the 6 unit College Writing classes, which counts as the first half of the Reading and Composition requirement.

I'm not sure about American History and American Institution requirements because I satisfied those with my AP classes.

American Cultures requirement is unique to Berkeley, which means you can only satisfy it with courses from Berkeley. But you can take that class pass/not pass.

I don't think the ac requirement can only be completed at Berkeley. I think I saw a list of classes on assist.org that fulfilled it at my cc.

yeah...as i stated above, the amer cultures req can be completed elsewhere...see: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE AC REQUIREMENT – Draft (jec)

ohhh, really? sorry if I'm wrong... are you guys sure?

My Calso guide... told me that though. Maybe I heard wrong?

Subject A, American History and American Institutions are almost always satisfied by students who attended high school in California.

Subject A (ignore that it's ES -- same for everyone, except sample schedules): ES New Students: Getting Started
AH&I: American History and Institutions

American Cultures is a campus-specific requirement (meaning especially that IGETC doesn't satisfy it). American Cultures

oh really? so subject A is basically US History and Government?

Where in Bearfacts are you guys seeing this information?
Thanks

01-09 SUBJECT A REQT SATISFIED
01-09 AMERICAN HISTORY REQT SATISFIED
01-09 AMERICAN INSTITUTION REQT SATISFIED

sweet.

AMERICAN CULTURES REQUIRED

not sweet. lol.

guys...you've gotta do some sleuthing...you may have taken classes that qualify for the cultures requirement...there is a list of courses that qualify (available in my posts above) at various colleges. if a course is not on that list, and you think it may fulfill that requirement, you need to file a petition....a committee meets periodically and reviews these, so you should probably do it early. i took an american lit class that discussed asian american, latino, and african american contributions to lit....i'm going to see if that will qualify because it appears to fit the guidlines:

<a href="http://academic-senate.berkeley.edu/committees/amcult/documents/AC_Guidelines_Apr2006_FIN%201.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://academic-senate.berkeley.edu/committees/amcult/documents/AC_Guidelines_Apr2006_FIN%201.pdf</a></p>

AH&I is basically history and government in high school. (This is NOT always the case, but how most students do satisfy this requirement.)

Subject A is basic writing/composition.

American Cultures is Berkeley's own attempt at making its students aware of multiculturalism.

AH&I and Subject A you can potentially satisfy before enrolling at Cal -- depends on what courses you took and whether you did well on your AP English or SAT Verbal.

American Cultures MUST be satisfied at the collegiate level; most likely at Cal, but there are some CC courses that count.

Subject A can't be satisfied through IGETC? So the two English classes we took for IGETC doesn't cover it? Lame...

Woudn't basic writing/composition be satisfied by taking the IGETC required English courses? Or is there an upper division English comp requirement?

According to Assist.org, those who attended CCSF, at least, satisfy AH&I by taking one of three classes: HIST 17A, HIST 17B, or POLS 1.

For those of you wondering about other school agreements, I found this under "By Major > Information: American History & Institutions Requirements" after selecting my CC and To: UC Berkeley.

sorry guys but i've abandoned hope that anybody here actually reads posts that answer questions about the cultures requirement.
