I'm attending West Point in the class of 2010 and I was just wondering if anyone could give me an idea of about how fast my mile time needs to be (for females). I can meet all the requirements for physical fitness without a problem except for long distance running. About how far do we run a day in beast and about how fast of a pace should i be able to hold for a long time? I've been running 2-3 miles every day, but i don't think my time will be up to speed with everyone else. Any help at all would be really appreciated, thanks!

first off, get the 1 mile out of your head. from now on, unless you're in track, you aren't gonig to be running or timing anything less than 2 miles. Minimum passing time for women 17-21 in age is 18:54, which is reaaaallllyyyy slow. time yourself whenever you run. You should run the first 2 miles in 18:30 no matter how far you're running. I doubt that we're going to be running any farther than 4 miles at the most in beast if even that far.

ok i'll be working on it, thank you for the info!

you will take an apft the first couple of days. based on that they will put you in a run group. i'd say, if ur running 2-3 miles a day, you should be fine.

Since no one should aim for the minimums...here are a couple of benchmarks. A smokin' time for a 2 mile run is sub 13. This is after the pushups and situps, so keep that in mind. A max time is under 1530. A decet time is under 1620. A passing time, to West Point (ie will not put you into remedial PT) is sub 18. In order to not fail it, you need to be sub 1854. For more information, Google Army APFT and you'll get a bunch of sites.

For Beast, though, you're never going to run more than 3-4 miles at a stretch. Some days are speed work, so that's even less. Almost all of them are in formation, so you'll have a pace set by other people, and a cadence to sing and keep your mind off the pain :) The green group (slowest group, cut off for which is sub sixteen, which is most of the girls) runs around an eight to nine minute pace....Don't worry, you'll be OK. Cadre will work with you over the summer. Just be prepared for the APFT at the end of the summer. That WAS the Fall APFT for the plebes, so do well, ok?

what was the range for the extra points?

For the women, sub 13 will get you 125, and under 1530 will score you over 100.

i think the maxes for guys are: 96 push ups, 100 sit ups and 11:54 2-mile.. if thats correct it should result in 375 points

And what do these extra 375 points do?

They earn you an A+ for a grade and forever allow you to be in the good graces of DPE. There's fewer than around 15 cadets total at the academy that get a 375 if I'm not mistaken.

yeah to have the ability to keep both the strength and speed to required to get a 375.. impressive

So if admitted for the class of 2011, what can I do now to ensure I get the most "bonus" points?

Run lots, do lots of push-ups, do lot's of sit-ups, and do lot's of exercises that make you run faster, do more push-ups, and do more sit-ups...but do not think you can do alternate activities even if they keep you fit...you can balance them with the 3 above, but to do well at the run, PU, and SU, you must run, and do PU and SU! Too easy of an answer, sure, but it's the truth!

So get physical fit. Push limits. Be the best I can be, and over-preform on tests, and such? As a result, I will be rewarded with the "points" for doing better than the requirment, and the rest of the cadets?

what grade does a 300 get? a 280?

A 280 gets you a B-, a 300 an A-

This is a bonus grade or are cadets graded on their performance?

Graded on performance. This goes into your GPA.

Oh, wow. This I did not know. Thank you for the information. I am going to work out more efficiently now. I have a lot of work to do.

It's an awesome policy. West Point promotes intellectual and physical development. Every school should follow similar principles.

Your overall grade as a Cadet in determining your class rank will consist of 55% academic, 30% military, and 15% physical.
