Beating the clock at CR and writing

Hi all, I am a non native speaker (a.k.a hope to be an international student:P)

So far the SAT math and me are friends
but the time on both CR and writing (not the essay part) make my life a living hell.
In writing I finish the question just on time or omit 2-3 if I ran out of time.
On CR i usually omit 3-6 question due to time problem

I give up to 5 minutes to sentence completion (5 to the 8 questions to 2-3 for the 5-6 questions) and the rest of the times goes on the passages
I read the short passage and then answer the questions, and in the long ones I read the first and second paragraphs to get the gist of the text and then go to the questions and work back and forward. In the paired ones I work on the first ; do all the questions that are relevant to the first, and then I move to the second.

I tried to read the passage and then answer (took a lot of time), I tried to read the question and then find the answer ( didn't work at all)

As for writing I check for an error, if I spotted it I look for the answer, If not I check the answers to see if there is a good answer. It takes me 30-40 sec per question

Any tips? If I only had 2-3 minutes I could have answer the other questions

Thank you all:)

for the Writing section, it is important that you know all the grammar rules.
I’ve already spot a grammar mistake in your writing above ^ lol
you said:“So far the SAT math and me are friends”
it should be “So far, the SAT math and I have been friends”

–> this type of questions usually show up on the grammar section.

and as for reading, there’s no way I can help, haha I’m pretty bad at it too.

peace

lol I spotted an error in your writing too OPK: “I’ve already spot a grammar mistake in your writing above” should be “I’ve already spotted a grammar mistake in your writing above.” So what are all the grammar rules? I usually mess up on the idioms or something easy.

I really need help with reading too.

shouldn’t

be “Grammatical Mistake”??

just wondering…

I would recommend that you use RocketReview for BOTH Critical Reading and Writing in addition to collegeboard tests.

WRITING
The writing MC can easily be fixed by reviewing some concepts in a review book or on Sparknotes. For the error ID, you should begin to notice a pattern; words such as I, me, you, to, from, and others tend to be the wrong answer on easy problems. These words (I, me, you) tend to be wrong because they signal a pronoun error. You can easily check the sentence to see if the pronoun is misused. Other words(to, from, and other idioms) also tell you to be careful because it tells you that an idiom is improperly used. By noting the patterns and reviewing the concepts, you should be able to finish the section on time.

Critical Reading
I should tell you before hand that I am good Critical Reading except when it comes to the two passages that are COMPLETELY UNRELATED (which is where all of my errors occur with a couple of stupid mistakes on my part). When it comes to those, I usually don’t finish two or three. However, I do understand the CR section well enough to give you some advice. For the Sentence Completions, you should use directs hits and study with Collegeboard tests. That should easily get you where you want to on the Sentence completions; if not, then you may need to get a review book or go to Sparknotes to find out how to break down the sentence completions if you have not already done so.

PASSAGE BASED READING
When it comes to the passage, you must understand this: THE ANSWER IS ALWAYS SUPPORTED WITH THE PASSAGE. If you don’t get this, the Passage based questions will beat you up. Honestly, you may think that it is easy, but is really is harder than it seems. If you look at the explanations for the CORRECT answer for collegeboard tests, the explanation will ALWAYS include a line reference – for both the line reference questions and the inference questions. The answer is always in the passage. Once you get that you should be good. If you use the RocketReview method, you should finish the CR section early.

My Critical Reading score: 650

My score breakdowns:
Writing MC - 42 right, 7 wrong

Well I’m not going to assume that I know your specific strategies, and how they work for you. Personally, I tried to do the sentence completions as quickly as possible (2 minutes for 8 questions). Sentence completions are obviously a lot less subjective, so its either you know the vocabulary or not, so they, at least for me, go relatively quickly.

If you’re pressed for time, I don’t recommend reading the questions before reading the passage, or stopping your momentum by answering a question after you think a specific point has been reached. In the end, you’re going to have to basically read the entire thing anyway, and the potential page-flipping and constantly referring back to the question that comes with skimming the passage’s main points. I was fine with just reading the passage and answering questions, and going back when the passage required it. For the passage based reading, I felt that reading both passages at once established a stronger contrast between the two, furthering my understanding of them.

score breakdow:
Writing MC- 45 right,4 wrong, 9 essay (700)

but 590 on CR lol
