Becareful of Deceptive Teachers Writing Recs.

I doubt your academics are stellar like you proclaim they are. He possibly wrote the good recommendations for the better people in your class. Are you going to cry now? Sorry.

Top grades or scores do not equal BEST.

The best writers in my class have rarely held the top scores in any lit or lang class. Homework and structure lead to generally high scores, same with test scores. Creativity and style are necessary for skill, but not for high grades.

You can obviously write without major flaws to get those scores. However, not being bad does not mean it is good.

Our valedictorian has never been considered a genius, thinker, or even very smart. She just turns things in and studies hard. She isn’t particularily knowledgable, innovative, or anything else. But tell her what to do - and she will do it.

Grades are not a reflection of talent, it is involved, but it is not an exact coorelation. So that is not a good arguement for ‘I shoulda been xxx’.

well put DSC

=P I love how you spell my name, Mister Sinister.

I, too, am curious as to why you think he has a grudge. Did you ever do anything to him? Are you rude in his class? Did you sleep with his wife? (That last one is a joke, in case you didn’t catch it.)

I think we should bring this thread to a close. CC fails once again in promoting advice for fellow students, and seeks only to promote criticisms from those who have absolutely no clue what they are talking about.

some of us raised perfectly reasonable questions that you neglected to answer. if you had, maybe we could bring this back to your original question and get somewhere. but, by you slinging mud back it perpetuates the negativity in the thread.

your call on where this goes

The same thing happened to me, where I got a glowing recommendation but a slew of outstanding or above average remarks on the evaluation. I waved my right to see it, but he took me aside after class and was nice enough to tell me how I did. Granted, I consider myself to be a pretty smart kid, but I chose the teacher that knew me the best, even though I struggled the most in that class. And you know MisterSinister, frankly I’m glad he talked about it with me, but even more so that he wrote the letter for me in the first place. There were a few sections where his decision puzzled me, and at first I was a little confused, but he explained to me that he was comparing me to every student in his career. Then he told me the letter was a great opportunity to explain that, in spite of my schedule and my circumstances, I was an excellent student and would do well in college because I’ve proven that I can balance school, work, and devotion to a single extra-curricular. I appreciate his honesty and don’t think he was out to get me, so I went ahead and thanked him with the standard Godiva chocolate gift basket and thank you note.

While I understand your frustration, take this as an opportunity to show the adcoms that you’re an excellent student, but you’re human. Besides sometimes it’s suspicious to hand out a bunch of “best in my career” because it might be extremely biased and untrue.

I lol’d. Behd.

Some of you guys are mean.

800 on W? 12 on SAT essay? 5 on AP?

Lol. I did those things and I didn’t even come close to being the best writer in my class. The best writers in my class had talent that could never be expressed by test scores.

Mister Sinister, you are one unbelievably arrogant person (and this is coming from someone with an ego the size of a large planet/small star).

You have some nerve making a thread on CC, getting feedback from a TON of people, then calling them idiots.

Don’t start a thread if you do not want replies.

If you only want replies that agree with what you have to say, don’t start a thread either. Nobody here is any less intelligent or any less of a person because they disagree with you; you’re not on some enlightened plain.

Stop insulting the people trying to give you honest feedback.

lol @ this thread.

Mister Sinister,

Please do yourself a favor. Grow up.

“Above average” and “top 10%” should be very good markings for any student, considering that the majority, if not almost all of the population is just average. But of course, that rating was not good enough for your arrogant ego.

I would also suggest to change your username.

We’re not trying to be mean. He basically said everyone in this thread is an idiot, because we didn’t agree with what he had to say.

Therefore, we have the right to just bash him now… or a mod could lock this thread, because it isn’t going anywhere useful for the OP or any other member.

When a moderator participates in a thread (as I have, here), another member of moderation team will watch how the thread develops and make all decisions about thread-locking, etc. That puts the participating moderator on an equal footing with other participants, and that is happening here.

There is an opportunity here for the OP to learn something about social interaction with his fellow human beings, which could help him end up with better college admission results and could help him thrive better in college. Or maybe onlookers can learn from the comments here even if the OP doesn’t. Anyway, a high school student with good self-knowledge and an accurate understanding of how well other students at the same high school have performed throughout a teacher’s career will probably not feel deceived by how a teacher fills out an application form, and can enjoy his Thanksgiving break without having to post complaining threads on CC. The disadvantage (well, really it’s an advantage) of posting about such issues on the World Wide Web, where billions of other people can see what you post, is that other participants may not see the issue the same way, and may provide the OP with a social clue.

From post #26:

Apparently he has not understood. Post #28:

And Post #45:

Hmmm… lets be more tolerant and understanding to Mister_Sinister. I’ve been studying psychology, and Mister Sinister isnt acting in such a way because he is an arrogant brat (well, maybe yes, but still). Rather, he feels dissappointed since he suffered a hard blow to his self esteem and pride by being ‘degraded’ by his teacher.

Still, I agree with the consensus that Mister Sinister should have more respect to his teacher for his great rec letter.

Also, this example teaches you. ALWAYS be humble and respectful to your teachers, as well as CCers (calling them ‘idiots’ is not a good idea. Probably CCers are mostly people with a degree of brain calibre, since they care enough to search and spend time looking for their best college match)

PS: This thread should be closed. too much flaming to my taste >_<
