In the highly competitive corporate world, it’s probably in your best interest to get an advanced degree is you aspire to reach CFO heights. Although it’s possible to reach that level without an advanced degree, you will probably run into more jobs that require it than not.

Of course top performers can always advance in business regardless of education. It depends if you excel at your job or not.

I don’t think a BA in Wharton would make you competitive for a CFO position, when many of people applying for that type of position have MBAs from top ranked graduate b-schools.

If you did undergrad at Wharton, an MBA will not be necessary for most jobs/ job paths. Get a good job straight out, climb the ladder and no one will be looking for an MBA on your resume unless, perhaps, you want a dramatic career shift.

If you went to a lesser school undergrad and you can get into Wharton, Harvard, Stanford B schools, it’s probably worth it if you’ve had trouble getting hired for elite jobs.

Make no mistake what your $200K buys: big name on resume and network, network, network!
