Becoming a RA

How competetive is the process?
what are they looking for in applicants?
what is the process like?
what are the advantages and disadvantages of being one?

Are there any RA's on CC?

All information much appreciated.

(Idk if it is school particular but I am interested in becoming one at UNC or NCSU whichever one I go to)

I’m an RA. You should do it. It makes no sense not to. The process at my school wasn’t particularly competitive, probably half of the kids who applied got it. Our interviews were done in a group, but it’s probably a 1-on-1 interview for you. After being accepted and getting to know my hall director more, it seems like they look for people who are able to relate to freshmen/others and are overall people you could just chat with.

The advantages greatly outweigh the disadvantages. I get free room and board, a sweet job to stick on my resume, and I am also guaranteed to hold the job until I graduate. I am only on call 11 times a semester…while they advertise it to be a whole lot more. I’ve done the math out and I’m getting paid about $30 for every hour that I am actually doing “RA stuff.” Better than a real job. I also got to meet 20 great new people (my fellow RA’s), along with the other RA’s in my area.

The main disadvantage at my school is that you don’t get to pick where you go; I was placed in a dorm that’s pretty far from my classes, but more importantly far from my friends. I have to make extra effort to hang out with people now, but sometimes when I’m just feeling lazy I’ll just vegetate in my room, or chat with my residents. I also am not a fan of the single that I get…this is simply a matter of opinion, but I’d rather live with someone. You also start to get introduced as, “my friend, he’s an RA” which is annoying sometimes.

Edit: Oh and as for actual RA duties…I barely have any. I guess this should go in the advantages, but my particular dorm (luckily) is not very party-hard…i.e. not all freshmen. The people who live here already know what’s up and they don’t go crazy in the dorm, meaning I don’t have much actual RA’ing to do. Results may vary.

I’m an RA!!! So I’ll answer your questions.

How competetive is the process?

-It depends on the university I guess.

what are they looking for in applicants?

-Somebody who will be able to have positive interactions with residents and be somebody who residents can feel comfortable coming to. Also somebody of high integrity who will do the right things in the right situations.

what is the process like?
-For me it was a group interview followed by an individual interview. the group interview consisted of various tasks revolving around working together on things.

what are the advantages and disadvantages of being one?

-The advantage is that it’s a REALLY fun job and the work you do hardly seems like work half the time. The disadvantage is that you’re actually expected to abide by housing policy, so if that isn’t your thing then maybe RAing isn’t the best job for you.

Do you all have much problems dealing with people who are to loud, party in there dorms, do drugs in there dorms, etc?

Thank you for your comments
