How common is it for OOS students to apply for state residency and to be accepted? I come from a middle class fam and was hoping for this to lessen the tuition load a bit. Thanks!

It’s called “trying to game the system” and it does not work. You are a resident of the state in which your parents live. Here are the rules:

[Virginia Domicile, Undergraduate Admission, U.Va.](http://www.virginia.edu/undergradadmission/status.html)

Bear in mind that UVA meets 100% of need and will hopefully continue to do so. The tuition load might not be as great as you think for OOS.

[University of Virginia Financial Aid](http://www.virginia.edu/financialaid/index.php)

The only exceptions for students would be if you are emancipated or be classified as independent for IRS/FAFSA purposes (which is hard), and then you would still need to live in VA for a year, have a driver’s license, vehicle registration and voter registration.

OOS tuition really isn’t that bad through ACCESS UVA. If you are from a middle class background it might not be as “cheap” as the instate rate, but you’ll likely get something, especially as the COA continues to go up each year.

Thanks everybady. I’m feeling more reassured now! At least UVA’s financial aid stands stronger than that of most large California schools ha. Hopefully I’ll make it in!

if you’re OOS, hopefully that means you’re skilled enough to score some scholarships

that’s a lot of Ses

well I’m planning to emigrate here, cuz my home state sucks.

and I stayed here over the summer doing C’ville non-UVA things. and I’m working a job at Pantops, and I’m essentially self-sufficient…
