So I’ve been thinking about becoming an orthodontist and know that they have to have a 4-year bachelors degree before dental school, but in what? I am currently a first year undergrad student majoring in mathematics and not sure if I should keep going in this major or change it.
You can major in anything you want as long as you meet the pre-reqs for dental school. Usually one year of general chem, year of organic, year of general bio, year of physics. All classes need an associated lab. Requirements vary by the school; others can include calc, English (usually a writing class), econ, psych, stats. Higher level bio and chem classes, like anatomy, biochem, histology, microbiology can be helpful in dental school.
Best to major in something you like in case you change your mind about dentistry. Have you shadowed an orthodontist or general dentist?
^That.
Definitely go for something useful, but my dentist majored in art. He did have to take some extra classes to get the necessary courses in once he decided he wanted to be a dentist, but he is living proof that you can major in ANYTHING. (And he’s a pretty amazing dentist, too!)
Definitely you can become an orthodontist by doing a 4 year bachelor degree in biochem , microbiology and anatomy . You can do your dental training by having any one of these bachelor degree. You don’t have to major in biochemistry, microbiology, or anatomy - although you certainly could if you wanted to. But your major in mathematics is just fine as long as you satisfy the dental school prerequisites.
