Becoming an RA - Transfer

I'm a transfer student, and I want to become an RA in my senior year. What can I do to have a better chance competing against students who have been involved with ORL for 2+ years? How do I join floor government?

The best thing you can do is be involved with ORL yourself the first year. There was extreme competition for the positions last year compared to any year before that, and perhaps the chances will get much more difficult. I was the External Vice Presidents of one of the floor at Hedrick Hall, and I made a close connection with the SLs, some of the RAs, and including the RD and ARD. However, as soon as group interviews rolled around for the RA position, a great majority, including me, didn’t even advance. Even the most active non-ORL students who help out with programming, etc… didn’t even advance. Therefore, the optimal you can probably do is to fill a Student Leader position whereever you’ll be living. As a transfer student, you’ll probably be living in Sunset Village, so you may find one opening or someone resign there. If that doesn’t happen, your RA on your floor will ask members of your community that want to be involved. My suggestion for you is to take the External VP position, as you will be working close with the RA/RD/ARD of your building.

Good Luck
