Bed Bath & Beyond

I’ve been reading for some time that BBB was in trouble and closing stores, but was surprised to see the store nearest me is closing. Nothing online had indicated that this location was on the list so I headed there yesterday, only to see the store closing signs. Then I read today that they are closing another 150 stores. Many of us headed there to help furnish dorm rooms and first apartments for our kids. My son and I have both been exchanging our SodaStream tanks there, so I guess we’ll have to switch to Target and miss out on the 20% discount!

Yeah, I just read today they are closing all NYC stores except 1. They furnished my HS and college dorm rooms, as well as my first (and only) grown-up home. So sad.

Yep, they are in big trouble. They were not able to meet their latest loan payments and are basically bankrupt. I too furnished much of my daughter’s dorm room from there. But that was 10 years ago, and the place is not what it was then. Honestly, easier to do dorm furnishings at Target and Walmart today.

Those 20% off coupons (that whey would accept even if expired) were a nice deal. Very sad to see them closing down their Harmon Face Values locations. There is (was) one in my town and it beat out CVS and Walgreens for best drug store around. Also, they own the Christmas Tree Stores, another place they purchased and now will have to close.

Our closest BBB is closing too. I also shopped for some of my D’s dorm room there but that’s a store that I’m not going to miss. I much prefer Home Goods.

Reminds me of a Simpson’s episode:

I wonder if that’s still open.

Same here. A really large BBB in big city closing. Everything though is 20% off which matches the coupons at least.

So far looks like the Mission Valley store hasn’t made the list. Who knows how long it will last; not easy to shop at any more. Maybe they’ll go all online like Linens and Things did for a while after it closed their stores.

BB&B sold Christmas Tree Shops at the end of 2020. I guess it wasn’t enough to save them.

well, that is good to know

I think the comments that places like Target, TJ/Home Goods and Walmart and the like just surpassed them in terms of price, convenience etc. Sure, I remember going there for our bed toppers and such for dorms - but haven’t been in one in several years now. For me, that was an era similar to when Kohl’s served a purpose for our family…and now I don’t use either.

I think probably I wouldn’t even consider going to BBB unless I had a 20% off coupon and was looking for something real specific. It also used to be a typical wedding registry for people around here.

The BBB store near me is one of the ones being closed. I went last week and they were clearly selling off stock, but the only ‘sale’ was that everything was 20% off. Since I only bought items with a coupon, to me, this wasn’t a ‘gotta buy now’ kind of sale. I esp enjoyed shopping here when my girls were getting married and setting up a home. They all set up their wedding registry here. The return policy was stellar. I will miss this store.

I loved ordering here and picking up at the far away college towns BBB stores. So convenient. I guess with free shipping now…people just don’t bother.

The last few times I’ve been to BBB, I’ve left empty handed because they didn’t have what I was looking for…and it was stuff I always bought there.

One local BBB closed a couple of year and we have one left. But the last few times I’ve gone in there, I was wondering if it was going to close soon because so many shelves were barren. I’ve been trying to support brick-and-mortar businesses, but it’s hard when they don’t have the items available.

My DDs only wedding registry was done at BBB. This was almost 5 years ago, but they had everything she wanted!

It’s the same at the BBB near me. The last few times I’ve gone in, a lot of the shelves have been empty and they don’t have as big a selection as they used to. I also think they’ve gotten rid of a lot of their employees…they used to have a decent number of employees, but now they don’t seem to very many at all.

What I loved about them is that they could tell you what stores had inventory. When items were sold out online, I was able to find stores that had the items. This worked at Buy Buy Baby, too.

Their order in one store and pick up at another plus coupon stacking was great for college move in. No one else was doing that in 2006! Ordered in So Cal picked up in Western Mass. convenience on another level. But like others I had no need to go there after that.

I also have not been in a BBB in many years even though my office used to be within a mile of one. We did furnish a lot of D1’s dorm room in NYC in 2010 from BBB.

Ha, I will never forget my first visit to the Mission Valley BB&B. We utilized their Pack and Hold program for college students to purchase the majority of items for D23’s dorm room, since we were flying across country to move her in. I was amazed to see they had a large section that sold wine! Who knew BB&B sold wine?! Not I (with few exceptions, in MD you can only buy beer, wine and liquor in what we refer to here as “liquor stores”)!

I learned the meaning of “Beyond” in their store name! :joy:

One of my best mom moments…and most embarrassing for my kid…I got to the register to pay for our pack and hold order…and realized I had left my coupons at home! I politely said “anyone have any extra coupons they aren’t using?” My kid wanted to crawl into a hole. But the lady behind me had a huge bulldog clip full of coupons…and gave me all we needed!
