Things like roaches and mice or bats don’t bother me. We have roaches all of the time at work. Sometimes we will have a dead one sitting in the bathroom or main stairs for weeks before someone cleans it up. We have mice come in from time to time. And we had a rat that chewed through our sewer line in the basement. And occasionally we had bats in the house until we capped off our fireplaces.
“Regular” mice don’t send me into a tizzy. If the cats don’t get them, the mousetraps will. Deer mice are a different story. Hantavirus is not something to mess with… there is no treatment.
When my husband’s parents moved to St. Louis in 1950s (his dad was in med school), they rented an apartment. His mother was shocked to see cockroaches, told her new friends they were going to have to move. The friends got a chuckle out of it, explained that they were very common. She was a big fan of Tupperware when it came along.
Back to OP… my quick skimming of Google results for bedbug lawsuits or settlements tells me that it would not be easy to get $$ compensation that way. Most of the big $$ settlements involved long term renters living in slumlord-owned rentals. Plus, tort and contract laws are state-specific, so the outcome in a CA case might mean zip for a case in FL and vice versa. I also wonder if the rental agreement includes an arbitration clause… but don’t take my words for this… I’m just a regular Joe Schmoe posting my musings on the internet and not an attorney giving legal advice.
I had this happen to me - same thing - two couples, only one bed was infected. I had stripped the bed and found nothing and thought my bites were just from sandmites or something. Husband actually managed to find a squashed bed bug…shudder… (they are very, very small) - anyway, we were in a resort and they moved us for the last night and gave us a 100% refund for the vacation. We were not belligerent, resort was VERY apologetic. Bed Bugs are a big deal and rightly so - if you bring them home it can cause major trouble. When we went home, we took off all our clothes in the garage and left the bags there and then I transported all of our clothes to the washer in black garbage bags. No bugs followed us home but it was a major pain in the tush. Also, if your friend is still reacting to the bites benadryl cream and benadryl allergy caplets really help.
My daughter found a bed bug in their room when they were visiting Disney World. They took pictures of the bug to show to the front desk. It was on a weekend, the girls were younger and at first the front desk did not handle it well. Monday morning when the girls brought it up was a different response.
The room was changed to another right away. The girls put all of their luggage in the bath tub as I remember. On Monday, all of their stuff was somehow fumigated (it’s been awhile but I remember something about treating everything with heat, I’m not completely sure). And they were reimbursed for the cost of the room.
My daughter had purchased a package so I remember it was confusing how much was to be reimbursed. This wasn’t a cheap hotel but a close to Disney luxury hotel. Management was very responsive once the regular crew was on duty Monday morning. They were very apologetic.
I think the original question was what should the OP do.
Bed bugs or fleas, it’s hard to determine what exactly is in the Airbnb, so I would call the owner or management company and vacate the unit. I would think the least the owner should do is pay for alternative accommodations. I would take my stuff to the closest laundry mat and at least run my clothes and whatever I can through the dryer. Or wash and dry.
When I got home, I would leave my suitcase outside for awhile. Do not bring in anything that touched that Airbnb. I think this is the advice I received when I posted about my daughter’s experience a few years ago.
I would ask for my money back from the Airbnb.
If the bugs get into your house, they are very difficult to get rid of.
I just looked at the OP, sounds like they were checking out the next morning. I would ask for my money back for the rental. I know bugs are common in Florida but this sounds worse than the usual bug problem
I just booked a mountain condo for summer and yes, the condos that said ‘pet friendly’ were immediately on the ‘no’ list.
I always take a small flashlight and check the seams of the mattresses in a hotel. I also never put the suitcase on the bed. Use the tables or the luggage rack.
I stay in the same boutique hotel every time I visit my Dad in San Antonio. Today, I arrived to my hotel after visiting with my Dad and plopped on the bed with my laptop. Within minutes, I had stinging sensations on my toes. I looked with dread where my feet had been resting ( I was on top of the bed, not on the bedspread, but not under the sheets), and I saw 3 tiny little black bugs, and one just a bit larger. I hopped off so fast, took some photos, picked up my stuff into the car, and went to the reception area and told them about it. They apologized, put me in a new room several buildings away, and when I entered the room, I immediately stripped down, put my clothes into a plastic bag away from the bedroom, and showered immediately. I don’t know if they were fleas or bedbugs, but I’m a bit freaked out by it. I was literally only on that bed for minutes. The rest of my stuff was on a wooden bench by the door to the outside. Ugh, I’ve feared running into bed bugs most of my travleing adult life, but this was the first time I had any possible exposure. I would just throw the clothes away except for the fact that I like the top I had on. I may still do it anyway.
I feel like just throwing the bag of clothes (Shirt, slim shell, white leggings) into the trash and not stressing it!
Of course, then in a couple of days DH comes home from 3 weeks in Spain walking the El Camino de Santiago and spending night after night in albergues filled with 20 weary travelers in every room. My God, who knows what he will be bringing home.
I’m currently quarantining a bag of clothes on the deck. Our fancy Hawaiian hotel had swarms of small roaches. Did not faze us much, but it is not something I’d want to bring inside the house.
@Nrdsb4 my money is on fleas if hotel allows pets. I’d wash the clothes on hot and dry in the dryer if that is possible without ruining them. Also, you can leave them in a tightly closed plastic bag in full sun to bake any buggers that might’ve hitched a ride.
