bed sheets and shipping packages to Rice

I need to fly in order to get to Rice. So does anybody know if it would be possible for me to ship some of my things to Rice before move-in day so that I don't have to bring everything with me on the plane ride?

Also, are the bed sheets and such from the catalog that we were sent worth getting?
If they are, can I have them sent to Rice instead of to my house?

I’d email or call your college coordinator or masters and ask if pre-move-in parcels are accepted. I hope they are – it sure made it easier sending out stuff by FedEx Ground and having it there on arrival. We sent the big stuff – a mattress cushion, linens, books, and some clothes, and we carried the rest on the plane.

We picked out linens/towels locally – XLarge isn’t that hard to find. Lots on the web – Overstock, etc.

Just about a month away – very exciting!

The stuff sucks from Rice.

As Ottoline said, ship it to your college. They will keep it for you for when you move in.

Regarding bedding - there is a Bed Bath and Beyond and a Target right here (depending on what you want). The rice stuff is pretty bad, and would be best to avoid.

Id get bedsheets from BBB personally. And have them shipped to Rice or you pick em up at the one thats a mile from rice

When I coordinated O-Week, we allowed students who lived abroad to ship things before O-Week, but not students who lived in the US. There is a very limited amount of space in the college coordinators’ offices, so I wouldn’t count on it. Call your college coordinator, though; it can’t hurt to ask.

At Bed Bath and Beyond you can pick out what you want at the store where you live and have them hold it for you at the store near Rice. There are lots of trips to the stores during O Week.

It’s nice to have your sheets already there or with you so you can make your bed when you arrive. Is there really time to chase down sheets at BBB, the first day?
If you can’t have them sent ahead of you, I’d pack them in your baggage.

Definitely talk with your coordinator who will know just what to do.

If it’s feasible, arriving a day or two early and staying in a hotel would help you get comfortable with the campus and Rice Village and, perhaps, the time zone – and you can pick up your sheets and linens then. And try out a dessert at Ruggles … [Ruggles Cafe Bakery](rugglescafebakery.com)

Skip the Rice sheets and get the cheap stretchy cotton ones at Target or some elsewhere. If you pack your sheets, you can have the bigger stuff shipped to arrive the day o-week starts. There should be some information about this in your o-week packet, or you can email your o-week advisors. I don’t believe they will accept general packages before o-week due to lack of space.

^^ It depends on where. We used the PDR at Wiess as spillover storage. But yeah, just email the college coordinator and confirm

This isn’t exactly related, but ttgivencej’s post reminded me of it: how common are lofts at Rice and how do we get them?

anyone can loft their bed. You submit a work request to the SMR (Student Maintenance Rep) and they take care of it

Or you can do it yourselves… (don’t know if it’s “legal” or not, but we did it with DD’s bed 6 years ago… because the SMRs are very busy the first few days!) It’s easy, but helps if you have a couple people to do it.

it depends on the building. I would wait.

Having been the SMR for 3 colleges during my time at rice… or maybe 4… i have seen some whacked out stuff, like a bed lofted without pins etc.

Someone knocked their sprinkler while doing something with the bed etc. thats 80 gpm of water that hasnt moved since the system was re pressurized (it smells awful).

<double post=“”></double>

DD’s room was lofted when she got there. I am not sure how they would have fit in without it. It was new section of Hanszen with the really big common room and the 2 small bedrooms attached to it.

^ you have a couple of configurations possible, such as bunking the two beds on top of each other or making a bunked ‘L’. but most are as you described

Wait, so you submit a form to the SMR and then you do it yourself? If so, where do you get the materials?

no. you submit a form and they do it for you. Sometimes your roommate debunks their bed and the parts are there already

Debunks their bed… LOL funny choice of words :)

It’s like a myth. You debunk em
