Beefs, why are you anti-Northwestern?

You've been biased against NU, whether explicitly or implicitly. I don't understand.

and you had to had to make a thread rather than pm'ing me? Very mature. message me if you wanna talk about this

It's not immature. If you're very public about your anti-NU bias, you might as well be public about your reasons why. So please do tell. What have you got to hide?

Dude, I'm not on anti-NU. Chill out. If you feel so strongly about it then go ahead and defend it when I write stuff in other threads. I'm sorry that I'd rather go to many other schools than NW. I'm entitled to my opinion.

Umm, I was just asking a question. What is the basis of your opinion? This is such a simple question.

Oh my goodness sanjenferrer, it's time to give it a rest, please.

Quite. Though a single student obviously doesn't reflect the intelligence or maturity of a university's student body, people are easily swayed. So please, give it a rest if you want to benefit NU's reputation (of which you seem quite concerned).

DISS.....?

I love how the UChicago team comes to the rescue :P

san...I don't think you'll ever squeeze it out. I understand where you're coming from, though.

this seems like a good time to point out something i've seen for a while, especially after RD decisions and deposits were sent in. This "Uchicago team" is getting really annoying, being led by people like beefs. They seem to have the need to justify Chicago as a top school just because it is overlooked sometimes. Everytime someone slights Uchicago or forgets to mention it in a discussion about top schools, these people jump in just to make sure we don't forget that "Uchicago is top 3 in x, y, and z field!!"

We get it guys. Uchicago is a great school. We all know it. It's why I'm attending next year. We don't need you pointing it out every other second.

Well, cory123, although I'm probably not a member of this 'team' you speak of, whenever a prospective student needs to know which schools are the top in a particular area, giving them information is not a particularly horrendous deed. Especially as Chicago is constantly overlooked on prestige-based CC.

sanjenferrer,
it's just a rivalry thing which means beefs probably thinks highly of northwestern though he probably won't admit it. ;) once you get off CC, the rivalry is almost non-existent as the two schools don't play sports with each other (which would be too lopsided..hehe). northwestern has illinois and to less extent michigan as main rivals in the big 10. chicago, on the other hand, shares the same athletics conference with schools like washu.

Sam, I absolutely think highly of Northwestern. It would be stupid of me not to acknowledge the leader in academia that NW is. But at the same time, given a choice, I'd pick a good number of other schools over NW, schools that fit my interests way more; most UChicago kids would not wanna be at NW and vice versa. It's not hard to see how one could overwhelmingly prefer one over the other.

I totally agree with cory.

I'm totally for defending the school you go to, but beefs in particular had been over the top. This was the sense I got over time.

Give what a rest? Beefs should be the one who should put his "Chicago complex" to rest. Phuriku, are you talking to me? because Beefs is someone who thought only females could be feminists until I pointed out otherwise. And accusing people of immaturity when I was just seeking discussion is taking the easy way out. If anything, it reveals that beefs is the one who's immature for making statements (implicitly or explicitly) and not defending them. Beefs, I doubt you will be able to defend your views on many things when questioned by the average Chicagoan.

Yes, I am.

You're absolutely right. You're incredibly mature, as indicated by your last post. (Blah blah blah beefs was the one who XXXX blah blah blah beefs is the immature one blah blah blah. Come on. Either talk like an adult, keep your conversations with beefs private, or get off the Chicago forum.)

Actually, even academically, I don't think there's that much of a rivalry. I haven't heard a single bad thing about Northwestern outside of CC this year.

The irony is that you yourself are participating in this conversation. If you think what I said was immature, then you could consider your statements immature as well. This preoccupation with mature/immature, a biased cultural norm, gives way to ad hominem attacks (hello? I answered a simple question).

Seriously guys, give it a break. This thread is a joke and should end right here.

Actually, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that one of my duties here is to keep the forums from spiraling into disorder. You are a threat to order, and so I have to tell you to either cut it out or leave the Chicago forum. The intent of this forum is to serve as a way to exchange opinions on educational and college movements and to allow prospective students a chance to ask questions and receive quality answers. Bickering among forum members on threads (this doesn't apply to private messaging) is unhelpful, and creating threads aimed at questioning another member of the forum is in no way appropriate.

If you look at the first page, Beefs was the first one to call me "immature" after asking a simple question. Who do you think started this "bickering"? As such, if you were truly trying to keep order, you should've called on Beefs to stop at his first ad hominem attack and not contributed to it yourself. Being biased towards one side is not the proper way to keep order. Also, by your logic, my starting this thread was also an attempt to keep order; I was trying to figure out, peacefully, the causes of Beefs's undue bias against NU, so that future petty arguments could be prevented.
However, the truth is...neither of us is a moderator. What right do you think to have this power?

Children, children, children!

Please.

Now, I think it would be a good time to bring out the Snap Cup!

I'll start.

sanjenferrer: Your name reminds me of Jonathan Safran Foer. (That's a good thing.)

ye I understand where you're coming from. It just annoys me when I see people treat Uchicago as this poor university which needs to be saved by incoming freshman who find the need to constantly boast to compensate for its so-called "underrated" reputation. It doesn't need saving. Either that, or I get the feeling incoming freshman, especially, find the need to feel adaquete in comparison to kids who got into similarly ranked schools that have more prestige..schools like Columbia or Duke or Upenn. I guess that's a natural feeling to have, but I say we should just be proud of Uchicago and forget about proving ourselves to people who neglect or underrate it.
