nah, every school has different criteria and looks for different things... like many people who get into one of HYP don't get into all of them. just try anyway.

a friend of mine was ultimately rejected from georgetown but accepted at Harvard....dont despair!

yeah columbia has one of the randomest selection "criteria" ever...behind MIT
and i do kno a girl who was rejected from columbia but got into princeton!

You are behind though..
Consider that Columbia, and really most schools, love their ED applicants.
It is extremely rare that an extremely competitive applicant get rejected to Columbia (rather than deferred) and stand much of a chance at a much more competitive round like Princeton RD.
Do you mind posting your stats?

Even if a school knows they are not going to admit you RD, but you applied ED and are a very strong candidate, they will most likely defer you as a courtesy measure.

"yeah columbia has one of the randomest selection "criteria" ever...behind MIT"

None is as random as Stanford. :)

1MX: I don't think Columbia did that this year. I know several VERY strong candidates who were flat-out rejected.

Columbia University Office of Undergraduate Admissions - Admission Statistics
About 22% were admitted ED and another 33% were deferred.
The results are consistent year to year. I don't know how you can say that what I said is not true.
If you were not deferred or accepted than you need to take a serious look at your application.

Alright, you're right. 3 of the people I know who were rejected, though, had 2250+ SAT scores, ranked in the top 10 (one was top 15) students of their class (of ~300 students), with decent (but not STELLAR) ECs and awards. I expected deferrals at the very least; their rejections caused quite a stir.

That is shocking. I would have also expected a courtesy deferral. Did they seem to have any major character flaws?

dont know much about stanford, altho now that i think about my friends who have gotten in vs. those that have gotten deferred/rejected this year and past years, yeah, it is pretty random

I'm friends with all 3 of them and I didn't see any character flaws. They're all nice, hard-working people.
