Been There/Done That Tips for class of 13

Honors Humanities is a part of Honors, so she will move in 1 day earlier than the general pop.

I just came back from UMD (DS is in AFROTC and there is a military formal tomorrow night…he forgot his dress shirt for his uniform) The campus is loaded with tour groups everywhere, at least 50 a group!

Jewel try to contact housing @ 1 week before and see if they will give you the mailing address (DS’s box number) Post office boxes do not correlate to room numbers… If they give it than ship it. Otherwise see if they have general mail and send it insured.

When registering for orientation, there is a spot to sign up any parents that may be attending.

I love my 'rents, but is it necessary for one of them to come? I’ll probably be flying in from OOS, which I can handle just fine, and I’d kind of like to do the whole orientation process solo.

Any advice??

I think I remember reading that it is recommended that parents attend but not required.

I also log in and check this first thing when I get home from work. S and I are at College Park to attend Open House tomorrow and really looking forward to it.

All these suggestions are great and we are learning a lot. Anyone got any information on how reliable and powerful the internet connectivity is in dorm rooms? Does it support online gaming?

rschlegel - My dtr is leaving in a few hours, by herself, to fly from CA to UMD for the activities this weekend. As a parent, that was hard to let her go alone. She understands that I want to go to orientation and she is fine with that. Let your parents enjoy this with you - they will be in different activities most of the time anyway!

My D says hi and said you are FB friends!

Centh, are you talking about the freshman meeting/tour? We did this on Tuesday. A couple of tips: You’re told to go to the Visitor Center, but really that’s just to get a parking pass. Send one person in for it. Then you drive to the Stamp Student Union, where the meeting is. There’s a parking garage across the street from the student union where you can park for free with your pass.

Be prepared for a LOT of walking. Wear comfortable shoes. My husband came from work (we’re reasonably local) and was wearing dress shoes. He regretted it.

We had lunch in one of the dining halls after our tour.

Have fun!

Oh, and about the internet connectivity: our tour guide told us that it’s usually fine, but that you can use an ethernet cable if there’s ever a problem. He says he and his roommate have a cable and occasionally one of them will have to use it. They sell the cables for $4.

Rub Testudo’s nose in front of the library!

If you are talking about the orientation during the summer we did not go with our DS. There really is no need for the folks b/c after breakfast you go your own way for the next 24 hrs.

Our DS has never had a problem with his internet connection. However, beware your cell phone, he has AT&T and gets coverage when his friends don’t. His friends get coverage in places where he can’t.

Poor Testudo the only thing shiny on his body is his nose! I am still waiting for him to fly away  I am pretty positive the tour guides won’t explain that in front of your folks.

I agree with Pax, wear comfortable shoes. The campus is quite large. You will go in not only the dorms, but other buildings like the dining hall and class buildings. Also the tour groups are huge which slow down the process. As I said yesterday I saw several of them and DS stated it has been that way non-stop for the last couple of weeks.

TODAY’S TIP

LY they required the menococcal vaccine, only found out in the summer. Go and get it now, b/c they required shot recs for enrollment, and menococcal was one of them. This vaccine requires a booster 6 mos later, thus if you do it in May, you can get the booster when they are home for Turkey Day, or wait until June and do the booster over Winter break

Consider getting an insurance rider for their stuff (we have one for his big ticket items…laptop, printer, tv, xbox, etc) it is very cheap…we pay about $50 bucks a yr.

I just wanted to add to the chorus and thank bulletandpima for starting this thread! My son will be a freshman this year and we will be driving from Michigan (as you can see). I’ve been keeping a running list of the valuable hints. Thank you so much!

Another tip, don’t sit by the phone waiting for their phone call. The longer it takes for them to call the better! It means they have spread their wings and are soaring. It hurts (trust me I know), but keep telling yourself they haven’t called that must mean they are TOO BUSY HAVING FUN and they don’t miss me. Remove your emotions and remember being 18!

KIDS…CALL or TEXT Just write I love YOU and I am happy, will call soon! You probably do 50 texts a day, that small line means everything to us as we write a check to TERP PAYMENT PLAN!

We attended the admitted students open house, it was fun. I did get a photo with the Testudo over by the Stadium, decked out in lacrosse gear (Testudo, not me, lol). :D

The meningococcal vaccine “Menactra” only needs to be given once. If they received the old meningitis vaccine “Menomune” more than 5 years ago, they should also get the new one “Menactra” now, but otherwise this is a one-dose vaccine. I am a nurse practitioner and order vaccines all day – just thought you should know for your planning. You don’t have to worry about scheduling another one 6 months later. There are other vaccines not required by UMD but perhaps suggested by your health care provider that are multidose vaccines (HPV “Gardisil” or Hepatitis A) , so that might have caused the confusion.

if you don’t already, get unlimited texting on your cell phone plan. It’s the primary way that college kids communicate to each other, and it’s a lot easier to text a quick notes back and forth to them.

can i confirm housing and decide on my roommate later?

twilight, yes you have until june 30th. i thinkthat i’ll just let them place me randomly and hope 4 the best

thank you :)

So if you Confirm Housing and don’t preference a roommate on the app, you have until June 30th to do so.
But how would you go about doing this? Do you have to send in some kind of form or letter?

Go to [Room Selection 2009](Room Selection | Department of Resident Life) and look at Preference Based Shopping and Room Exchange. I think Preference Based Shopping is what you are looking for but you also need to check the date, I think it was earlier.

that preference based shopping thing was not for freshmen. they sent that email by accident. you email reslife@umd.edu with your &&name b-day with whatever you want to say. i emailed them last week and they got back to me the next day. and yes its unitl june 30th

Thanks for the correction, Jessimae…it was kind of weird and I had trouble understanding it. Your comment was very enlightening.

Thank you so much jessimae and Centh.
Both of your informational posts helped regardless. (:
