if you can search the UMD threads here on CC, somebodynew has given the best description on the dining plans and how they work. Short cut…just get the resident Dining plan, unless you are have a football player appetite.

The dining plans, focus dates, terpbucks, etc. are confusing until you get there and start using them. Same for selecting housing for sophomore year.

Just a tip for jnrsmom. If you have a Bed and Bath in your area, you should be able to shop there (or on line),and the BandB in your area sends your order to the store location where you want your purchases to be picked up. Do your shopping at home, and although you may have to drive a bit to the closest Bed and Bath at least everything will be ready to be picked up. I also found that purchasing school supplies elsewhere at a local Staples or other store rather than the campus book store saved $$.

The beds are not x-long they are avg size. Just buy the x-long sheets because once you put on the mattress cover (if you buy the fluffier ones) it makes it very difficult to put on the reg size sheets, thus buy the x-long and you won’t be fighting with it,

Do not buy bed lofts. They are uncomfortable and the room is decently sized for both the beds. And if you do purchase one, you might as well bunk the beds

I think the room is big enough for guys, but not for girls. I didn’t see one guy bring things like butterfly chairs, but did see girls bring them, and there is no room for 1 let alone if both bring them, unless you do the loft. the rooms ar 10 x 12, (I believe), now add in 2 beds, 2 desks, 2 dressers and a fridge (if you bring one). It really leaves very little room.

bulletandpima, I would say the rooms are a bit larger than 10x12;. At least in Denton Hall the rooms were big enough to fit the beds on the walls in an L shape (with my fridge in the middle), which puts them at more like 12x14.

sbn…a while back I emailed the res life facilities dept. and asked them how the size of Centreville rooms compared to Denton. They said they were roughly the same size, of 10 x 12, altho some rooms varied. hmmph. ???

hmh…The rooms just seemed bigger than 10x12. Maybe because there are random indentations in the wall due to closet setups and such, each room gets a foot or so of extra space on some walls. Because I would say my single room in Commons is about 10x12, and my double in Denton was definitely bigger.

Haha…I went to see the Star Trek movie yesterday and this thread reminded me of one scene where Kirk gets on a shuttle when he first joins Star Fleet and absolutely smacks his forehead right on the overhead. I looked at my S and said “Get used to that, you are gonna whack your head on the loft in your dorm.” (He’s about 6’2".)

Bump…Very helpful thread by Pima that provides a lot of dorm advice, now that people are asking questions and doing last minute prep. Thanks again, Pima!

Just wanted to say something that hasn’t been mentioned:
Gemstone students, who are not attending GemsCamp are scheduled to move in on the 28th not the 27th. I called and had it switched without question, but unless you call they will not have your key or anything ready.
