before ap exams; some things to clarify

about the CAS policy for ap exams.

i know that you can get credit for most exams with 4/5, but i am not clear what this means. does this mean that we can be exempt from that particular field (i.e math, science) or does it mean that students have the chance to skip the intro class? can we actually use the ap exams to count it towards graduation? how about in the case of MAP? overall, are APs useful?

is it worth studying for APs, knowing that you are not ready for it (=cramming alot)?

any advice from current CAS studnets would help.

http://www.nyu.edu/cas/map/exemptions/index.html

all your questions will be answered in the above site. CAS does give AP calc credits.

then i should care to get a 4/5 because i can be exempt from MAP. uwa~~that means i have to start working crazy

Just because you can take an exemption doesn't necessarily mean you should. Coming from a science background, I know I'd have been over my head if I'd tried to jump from high school chemistry (AP 5, SAT II 800) straight into Organic Chemistry, which is second year college stuff. I've also heard from classmates that jumping from AP Bio straight into Molec. Cell is very tough, as well.

If I were you, I'd see AP classes and tests as a way to test just how qualified you are. If you do well, it'll definitely help you out freshman year when things won't be so tough.

so you suggest not studying hard 247 from now till the AP, and somehow making 4, and getting exempt from intro courses right? (esp. if that particular subject area is your weakpoint).

just to clairfy, AP exams cannot be used to fulfill credit requirements in CAS right? IF i place out of into calc, that stil means i have to earn a math credit in a diff course yeah?

also, can you choose to not count ur AP( or any other college credits)? or there is no choice?

jhpark, I DO NOT suggest slacking off, if that's what you're asking. If you're not going to do your best on an AP exam, then I don't see what the point is. In my opinion, students should take AP classes and AP exams to further qualify them for the rigors of college coursework.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned this before, but going from high school to college, I had "standards shock." What was required of me as a college student is far more demanding than what my high school did (I attended one of the best public high schools in my state). While AP did not help me with the culture shock, it cushioned the blow because at least I wasn't struggling with the material right off the bat.

AP exams can be used to fulfill CAS requirements. Whatever credits you bring into CAS will be on your transcript and count towards your overall number of credits, but you can choose to forfeit the exemptions. I used my AP Calc AB to get out of Calc I, but since my AP Calc BC score was only a 4, I elected to forfeit the credit and take Calc II. (It's a good thing I did. Going straight into Calc III would've been like asking for a buttkicking.)

yeah thank you for your message. i am not trying to slack off though. i am just simply not prepared for the exams that i have to take. i am doing my best, and if the scores aren't satisfying, i will be more than glad to take them again in college then. at least the preparation should do some help to me. just wanted to be assured about this. thnks.

ugh i looked at the modified ap equivalencies and looks like they arent even accepting ap macro anymore!!! dammmmmit...

shades...i was wondering because im not exactly sure how the whole getting credit for aps works, I got a 5 on bio last year, which is the equivalent of a natural science, so now i dont have to take any natural sciences? how many natural sciences is one required to take by MAP (if their maajor is not science related)? and also what does an elective credit mean? i know im clueless but thanks!

superman: Yeah, if you got a 5 on AP Bio then you're exempt from the Natural Science I and II requirements. What do you mean, elective credit? I couldn't find the phrase on the exemptions page.
