Before Applying?

I am a bit confused about something. I will have around 23-24 semester units by the end of July, and am wondering if I can apply to a CSU, or UC. I will be definitely meet the minimum 60 semester units and golden four after Spring 2017? So, I am wondering if I need 60 semester units before applying, or I can just apply and meet the 60 semester prior to attending Fall 2017. Please help! Thank you!

60 by the end of the Spring semester prior to transfer.

So, I do not need to get at least 30 units before applying?

You do not need at least 30 units before applying. You just need 60 semester units by the end of Spring 2017. However, you do need 30 units to apply for TAG (transfer admission guarantee), which is offered at some UCs.

omg thanks a bunch friend! this has settled much of my anxiety! gonna give Cal Poly Pomona, UCI, and UCR a try then. Wish me luck!

Yes, too few units to TAG in September.

What is your major?

Will you be able to complete IGETC and major prereqs by the end of Spring 2017?

How many units do you plan to take in the Fall?

I am a Biology major, planning on focusing on clinical research. I plan on taking around 14-15 units for fall and spring. And, a 4-5 unit course in the Winter. I probably will be able to almost complete IGETC. However, IGETC is not mandatory prior to applying or even transferring.

Just know that you’ll be competing with applicants who have completed their IGETC/breadth and prereqs.

If you have 23-24 units by the end of summer, and complete 14-15 in the fall, that puts you at 37-39 units. If you take 4-5 in winter, you’re at 41-44 units. That leaves 16-19 to complete in Spring. Depending on when updates with the UC are due, and depending on when your Winter term ends, you may not even be able to enter your Winter grades on your application. The UCs may view you as a riskier candidate because there’s a high likelihood of you not being able to complete 19 units in 1 semester, when you don’t have a history of having done so before. If they don’t take into account your Winter classes, that might hurt you even more.

My advice would be to add an extra class in the Fall, and do the 18 unit semester then. Then in Spring you can take the lighter semester. You need to use Fall to show yourself as the strongest possible candidate. Don’t bank on overloading in Spring.
