Befuddled

I've looked up on assist on what classes I need to transfer to ucsd as a psychology major. However, I'm still befuddled because I've also looked up other school's class requirements. Now, suppose I want to be able to fulfill UCSD's and UCLA's assist, how does this process work? If anyone could clarify on this, that'd be great. Thanks in advance

befuddled…is a strange word.

How I remember that word is even more strange. I’d think of a confused dog when I say that word ^^

your question kind of confuses me…i don’t really know what you’re trying to get at…you ‘fulfill’ the assist(i assume you mean assist.org) by taking as many of the required classes as possible…if you want to cover both schools, try and take the ones that overlap first. yeah?

Mkcman17,
Yep, that was exactly what I wanted to hear. However, if I overlap the courses, then how will I eventually finish my required courses? I seriously don’t get this. Seriously, this is rocket science [insert sarcasm here] ^^

i’ll tell you how i did it: my top 2 choices were also SD/LA. as long as you’re serious about UCLA, try to hit all of their reqs first (but do all the overlaps first-first). b/c UCLA is so uber-impacted and requires most or all reqs to be completed (depending on major), it’s best to knock those out. UCSD is much more lenient, and if you TAG yourself there, it’s cake anyways. worked for me like a charm…

I would say its not worth it. Unless you planning to go medical school or something. Just apply psychology to everywhere else and choose another major for UCSD.

@ LiveTheLimit: I’m also a psych major. I was admitted to UCLA for psychology, and UCSD for Human Development.

I applied for Human Dev. because (I’m not gonna lie here) the psych major at UCSD has so many prereqs that it made my head spin. I didn’t really want med school that badly, so I figured I’d just apply to a VERY similar major - Human Development.

That said, I HIGHLY recommend focusing on completing UCLA’s prereqs. You’re pretty much auto-rejected if you’re missing one for psych. I know a brilliant psych major that missed a prereq (with nearly perfect stats) and she was rejected. Essentially, get them all done.

As for UCSD, if you plan on sticking with psych, if you have roughly…40% of the prereqs done, you’re probably fine.

iTransfer,
my aspiration is aimed towards becoming a psychologist, so yes I am aiming for Medical school. Also, can you elaborate on your sayings? No offense, but I just can’t quite understand you completely.

Psychologist = scientist who gets his PHD in psychology (more academic) or Psy. D
Psychiatrist = went to medical school to get an MD then did a residency in psychiatry

Since you are heading towards medical school. Then yes it would be worth it to do the pre-reqs for UCSD. I’m just saying its not worth putting yourself through the trouble with pre-med classes if you are not planning to go to med school and just majoring in psychology. Pre-med classes tend to be very difficult and can bring your GPA down which can lower your chances at UCLA/UCB.

You don’t need to go to medical school to become a psychologist…to be a psychiatrist you do though.

@ LiveTheLimit: lol you sound just like me last year! I was a psych major and trying to go premed. Not anymore though. I’d rather just double psych and philosophy and go onto some form of grad school.

Sorry, everyone.
I guess I am a little ignorant on what I want to become.

itransfer,
How do I know which classes are pre-med?

emilsinclair9,
indeed; I am not understanding the concept behind these classes that I need as a transfer. I don’t even know what I’m going to do now, since they’re saying I don’t need to go med-school. Well, what I worry now is my classes–what I need, how many do I need, what to take, etc. Those things are put as first priority for me and is reckoned very judiciously. I’m a little lost from here to there. My HS counselors are completely useless (you know what I mean, right?) I’m just hoping to see my CC counselors,so I can further seek light in this.

pre-reqs for medical school are:
1 year of g-chem
1 year of o-chem
1 year of bio(with lab)
1 year of physics
1 year of calculus/statistics
1 year of english

[ASSIST Report: IRVINE 09-10 UCSD Articulation Agreement by Major](<a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>Welcome to ASSIST)

UCSD psychology major requires
1 year of bio
1 year of physics
1 year of g-chem
1 year of english/math

UCLA/UCB/other UC’s doesn’t require you go to through this. I wouldn’t go through all that just for UCSD. That is why I said just to apply as psychology to other UC’s and a different major for UCSD. But like mkcman17 said. You can just get a 3.0 not finish the pre-reqs, TAG UCSD, and get in.

But if you are heading to medical school then sure go for it. Finish the pre-reqs for UCSD. But if you are not and just want to major in psychology I wouldn’t put yourself through the trouble.

Whoah…you’re seriously the younger version of me lol. I started at my CCC at 16. I’ll be done in 1 more week :). I was the same way - trying to figure everything out, achieve that balance of course requirements, become aware and understand the process. It really just takes effort in meeting with your CC counselors and coming on here and asking questions. These are the best resources out there.

As for your situation, if you want to be a psychologist, you don’t have to go to med school. If you want to prescribe meds, then you’ll have to go to med school to become a psychiatrist. The latter is a much more rigorous route. Med school requires a year of chem, orgo, bio, calc, and physics. (normally that is).

These classes will almost undoubtedly hurt your GPA. That’s part of the reason why I dropped my med school aspirations; it was just something that I wasn’t passionate enough about. I love psych, not chemistry and physics lol.

Essentially you need to use assist.org to figure when you need for UCLA which is:

Gen Psych

Psych stats or some form of stats/calc

1 bio course

1 chem or physics with lab

I believe 1 Humanities.

(This is off the top of my head lol). Basically there are 5 prereqs for UCLA psych. There are like…15 or so for UCSD. UCLA’s program exceeds UCSD’s, so focus on getting those 5 UCLA prereqs done. This should be your goal. Also, focus on fulfilling IGETC and just working toward 60 transferrable units.

I can’t believe you’re a psych major, beginning in hs, and want/ed med school lol. Are you in Middle College by any chance? I did that for a year.

You need to shadow a psychologist and psychiatrist and see the differences. One is medical doctor and the other is a scientist. Psychologist can treat ppl with therapy but psychiatrist can do therapy and meds. Psychiatrist go to medical school (have to finish pre-reqs/take MCAT) while psychologist don’t.

iTransfer,
if I were to apply to other UC’s as another major, reckoning that I am a psychology major at my CC, then wouldn’t that be a problem? I’m sort of confused on how this works.

Also, since I only need one year of math, should i take trig and then calc?

Argh. Just forget it ~_~. Follow emil’s directions.

I suggest you talk to your CC counselor. Check out the career center. Then browse through assist.org choosing your classes. Different UC’s will have different requirements.

emilsinclair9,
I am currently a senior in HS and have lots to learn. I am attending De Anza college next fall. Well, the idea of med school came to me this year. A Stanford med student gave a speech at my school, to which he said, “There is a hundred minute in a game, you’re on the 94th minute, when does victory start?” I messed up my HS career, because I had no goals, no aspirations of any kind. I was stuck with the negative idea of school, until last year when I gain conscious. So, this year came to be when I though of further plans for life. My mind is sure on where I want to be, though I’d say i need alterations perhaps in the future when I see reality of college. yes?

I’m writing my senior thesis right now. yum yum (if you know what that is) two more weeks of school and I’m a college student.
