Behavioral Dismissal

I was dismissed from a very good public university for a cannabis possession charge. Since then I have completed over 90 hours of drug treatment, attended 12 step meetings, and have seen a therapist on a regular basis. I have taken classes at culinary school and have a 4.0. I received a 32 on my ACT. I am looking to transfer to a university that I know academically I can get into. On the application where they ask if I have been suspended, on probation, dismissed, or expelled from a previous university I answered very honestly that I was dismissed. Will they reject me because of the cannabis possession charge?

^i’m in(or soon to be) in a similar situation- only it happened in 10th grade, and I’m hoping to transfer next year…answers appreciated!

That’s ridiculous honestly, they need to legalise that “drug” and focus on more serious crimes…

Thats not the debate here. Honestly I agree with you. I was just at the wrong place in the wrong time. I am looking to transfer to a school in Colorado so hopefully they are understanding of what happened. I am not a drug addict and still have taken all the necessary steps to make sure this isn’t a problem. I just want to know if anyone thinks I will be able to transfer.

Thanks.

hi gohawks. I sympathize with you. I am applying to colleges as a first-year student with a 10th grade suspension for marijuana possession on school grounds. Obviously different colleges handle this in their own ways, but obviously it’s going to be a negative thing. On the other hand, I’m sure many colleges would be happy to scoop up a good student from a “very good” university whose only demerit is possession of an herb that’s decriminalized in many states.

Be honest, and fully explain the situation.

I don’t think most colleges would care, unless you are going to Pat Robertson’s university. If colleges expelled everyone who had gotten stoned, they would go bankrupt.
