I just heard from my school that they will not be hosting the essay portion of the SAT, and I feel that this would be detrimental to my chances at admission to an elite college like MIT and Stanford. I really need the essay portion on my first take on the SAT to show to colleges that I am willing to challenge myself on writing and to increase my chances in attending them. I plan on taking the SAT in May. What happens if I am absent on SAT School Day?
What happens depends on the rules where you are. There are several states now that are using the SAT to show schools’ compliance with No Child Left Behind laws and they are requiring students to take the test (in other words, intentionally skipping the State’s test day could be grounds for disciplinary action), and they may have make-up test dates for those who miss the test on its orginally scheduled date. You really need to check with your school to determine what the impact would be. However, your belief you have to have the essay on the first test is most likely not going to be a valid excuse for skipping it.
The essay portion is likely not being offered because your state decided not to pay the extra for it since it is not needed to provide data necessary to show your school is within required standards. And you cannot order it separately. If the college requires the writing section, like Stanford, you will need another test from a national testing date such as in May.
