Being an Athiest Student at ND

Can it happen? Or would you be scrutinized by the Catholic majority?

From the few anecdotes I’ve read on this board about atheists @ ND, it can happen. I guess it would really depend on the type of atheism…If someone is militant and confrontational about it (re: Hitchens), they’d probably be pretty alienated and hate ND. But if he or she is just simply a non-believer (passive), then I don’t think it would be a big problem assuming he/she can handle being around religious influences.

Professor Ramsey’s biggest complaint was always that the Midwest has no mountains. He was an avowed public atheist and no one cared, he got along great. But flat terrain, he couldn’t deal with that.

Anyway, I could name two guys in my dorm who are openly atheists and no one cares. There are probably more who just don’t bother to get in people’s faces about it. You’d get more scrutiny for being from Ohio and having latent enthusiasm for Buckeyes football.

just be aware that you do have to take 2 theology courses regardless, but these sometimes can be comparative religions too.

nobody cares, as long as you’re not an up-in-your-face type of atheist
