So i keep reading things about how Michigan isn't racist and other people who say it is. I'm a black girl and i've dealt with some racism all my life and i was hoping i could get some relief during college or will this not be possible? I'm not a sensitive person so when people joke with me about my race i can laugh with them/laugh it off but i don't want to be excluded or made fun of because of it. any thoughts? i was also wondering if the greek system is racist? i've heard that greek is racist at a lot of schools but if i go to michigan i'd want to join one. anyone?

if you ask the Black Student Union, this place is the equivalent of the KKK

@ForeverAlone really? could you give examples of what they say?

Diversity at college is weird. I’ve spent a lot of time on campus the past six months and it seems like the majority of students hang with their respective race. If you’re a minority and would like non minority friends, I assume it takes a lot of personal effort to put yourself out there. The most common interracial friendships I witnessed were Asian and white. That said, those Asians seem to be US citizens. The Asian students on visa hardly ever make friends with non visa students.

Ann Arbor is a very liberal (and safe) environment. The main complaints have been around low black enrollment rates and what’s perceived a discriminatory admission process against low socioeconomic status (SES) students.

These are complaints that can be applied to many selective colleges/universities and isn’t unique to Michigan.

Like any university, you’ll find people who may be insensitive (can I touch your hair?) but mostly it’s ignorance on those peoples’ part. Outright hostility just cuz you’re black? Less likely if ever. There are rude and snotty people – but they treat everyone that way. Among black students too. So you shouldn’t generalize, I’d say.

I think that the blacks at Umich are more narrow-minded than anyone else. I’m a black incoming freshman and I’ve never felt discriminated against by the school or by any of my my peers. If anything, I feel embraced by a school that still supports Affirmative Action and by the best freshman class the school has ever seen. There have been a few ignorant comments on the Facebook page and many students were offended yesterday when a dining hall served chicken and waffles with watermelon (LOL), but those things aren’t racist-- And if you think they are, take it with a grain of salt.

Yes, people are ignorant- everyone is. I was the only black female and even the only black person in many situations on campus (visits, orientation, other programs), and in those situations I’ve felt nothing other than comfort. But I can’t speak for you, of course, that only depends on what you’re comfortable with.
College is about getting out of your comfort zone, anyways.

If you have any specific questions or you want an update from me when school starts next month, feel free to message me! Ann Arbor is definitely the place for you to escape past racial tensions and it’s very much so possible. If you’re considering attending, definitely apply. Good luck and Go Blue! :)
