Thanks!

why is your class rank so low relative to your uw gpa?

If it were a little higher then you’d probably qualify for lower ivies and everything around that like JHU, etc.

EDIT: it might actually be harder for you to get into some UCs than ivies because they stopped doing AA and focus almost solely on SAT scores/GPA

Being URM definitely helps

18th percentile = Bottom 18%…

@spirral wut…

You probably meant top 18% because percentile is something else. Either way, I must ask why it is so low if you have a 3.8. If it is on a weighted scale, then I understand. If not, then you must go to an academically competitive school.

oh oops and yeah i got to a academically competitive school.

Do you guys think i have a good chance at UT Austin

I believe you have a pretty good chance at all the schools you have applied to. BTW, you’re in the 82nd percentile for your class. Good to see another black male on CC! Best of luck :)

Chance me back please http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?p=16844161

You don’t really have a chance at UT because their admission is rank-based, ie., if you’re top 7% you’re in, if not but within the top 10% they’ll consider you after they’ve automatically admitted the top 7%, and if you’re not 7-10%, your odds are very very very low. Admissions rely on rank and are not holistic.
You stand much better chances at universities that are holistic, especially in the Midwest and Pacific Northwest.
It all depends also whether you’ll need financial aid or merit aid.
UC’s: if your parents have the $50,000 it’ll cost each year for OOS applicants - no financial aid - sure you have a shot probably at UCSD, UCSB, UCD, UCI, UCB would be a reach.

@MYOS1634 UT austin has holistic admissions outside of the top 7 percent…

Not really. They have academic admits for those in the top 10% with specific test scores. You have the test scores but not the ranking. Even among the holistic characteristics they take ranking into account, along with GPA and test scores. They also look at your athletic talents, if you’re international and full pay, OOS and full pay…
All students who attend schools that don’t rank, homeschooled students, international students, athletes, and “regular” high school students compete for the last 25% spots.
So top 18%and URM may trump athlete or full pay OOS, but probably not… At the very least, it makes the odds of your getting into UT AUstin very low. It’s good you’re applying because “you never know” and you may get lucky but you absolutely can’t count on it. Discard the thought for now, so that it may be a good surprise if you get in, and you won’t be too disappointed if you don’t.
On the other hand, your stats and achievements make you a viable candidate for quite a few colleges - where else have you applied?

You’re an African-American male, meaning that you will be able to go to almost any school you want with your stats. If you write compelling essays, then you should have no problem with getting into your 1st choice school.

Rank still matters, though, even with affirmative action. AA isn’t as powerful as people think, except for some schools.

@heleuitr why would that affect my chances? President of MSA is a good leadership quality.

I think you’re underestimating the fact that the OP is a minority. Even if the OP wasn’t black, he would still have a good chance at the schools he listed. Qualified URMs always get a big boost, regardless of the school. Colleges are always searching for qualified minorities, so they will have a diverse community.@ arrozconleche

Being President of MSA will boost your chances even more. It makes you a double minority and shows leadership. Being a black male and a Muslim will help a ton. I think you should apply to a few ivy leagues. If you like small schools, then you should apply to a few top 10 liberal arts college.

Yes, being president of MSA will boost your chances.
@Imustbethegreat: with your profile (stats, EC’s, URM status) you can apply to all the top 25 Universities and LACs and have a shot. With your stats you can get an automatic tuition scholarship a UAlabama and if you’re interested in Engineering you’d get a $2,500 on top of that. You’d meet the basic qualifications for a lot of competitive academic scholarships and a lot of automatic scholarships, too. Top 50 universities and LACs in the Midwest, Pacific Northwest, and MidAtlantic would love to have you, and South to a certain extent too.
Just not UT Austin because they’re rank-based.
But seriously why would you rather go to UT than to the many, many universities and colleges where you have a shot - Rice, Emory, Tulane, Northeastern, Georgetown, Carleton, Bowdoin, Hamilton, etc…
Don’t restrict yourself to your state. Look at schools that are far away and where your stats will make you stand out.

DO apply to schools where you’re auto-admit: UT Dallas for example, or TAMU I think.
Look into UOklahoma.
Southwestern is probably a safety, too.
Then go ahead with all the top schools (anything strikes your fancy in the Top 50 LACs and Top 50 Universities?)

@Imustbethegreat look into Quinnipiac or Hofstra.

Ignore heleuitr’s idiotic comment. It’s an outstanding achievement
and anyone that would say not to mention it has other issues.

And you assume your school is a representation of Muslim ratio to student body? It’s a leadership position and anyone that would say don’t say your a Muslim it’s not a good thing has other issues to work on.
