Being contacted by colleges after the PSAT

I wasn't sure where to put this thread, but what colleges have you heard from, through that Student Search Service thing?

I just heard from the U of Washington, OR.

ive heard from a crapload but i also heard that they dont get your scores just what u report...beause i reported that i wanted to be an engineer and ive been getting alot of mail from engineering schools

I think colleges DO get your score. My daughter is a senior this year and took the PSAT in October 2005 (score 230). She hadn't received one piece of paper from a single college BEFORE the test, but afterward there was a virtual flood! She got calls, e-mails, and tons and tons of brochures, catalogues, and letters from colleges. We recently took a photo of her surrounded by the literal mound of stuff she was sent before we hauled it to the recycling center!

I got a 240, but I didn't get a single thing until last night.

thecomisar, you may only have heard from one place, but give it some time. I can assure you that you'll be flooded in the next couple of months.

I'm pretty sure colleges don't see your actual score-- the college will pay for a particular range/category and then the CollegeBoard sends the college names/addresses of students who meet the criteria. For example, College X might ask for the list of all students who are Hispanic or African-American and scored higher than 180. College Y might ask for a list of all students who scored higher than 215. College Z might ask for a list of students who reported that they are interested in the sciences and scored higher than 170. You get the idea.

As far as being contacted, if your score was good, you should expect tons of mail. (I'm a senior, so I took the PSAT last year.) I've gotten letters/viewbooks/etc from literally hundreds of colleges, most of which I've never heard of. Some colleges send multiple mailings; some colleges send an initial card, but won't send more unless they hear back from you. Then, if you qualify for National Merit/National Hispanic/National Achievement, expect another huge batch of mail.

I was flooded by my 217 (or something of that nature) sophomore year.

I know, because I messed up my address and apparantly didn't bubble in the "C" in "Cheyenne." So I get mail with "Heyenne" in the address, and I know it's from PSATs.

Oh, ok, thanks guys. I'll wait for more mail then, haha. It make me feel special :)

Collgeboard does not give PSAT scores to colleges. It provides colleges with students with PSAT scores above certain range. That's what I have been told.

My 2 cents

i just checked my inbox and there was 16 emails from colleges... i checked my email abiout 8 hours ago too

last year i took the psat as a sophomore and got 201. i got FLOODED with email/regular mail for the next 8-9 months.

this year i took it as a junior and got a 206. i think i've recieved like...ONE piece of mail/email ever since. maybe colleges figure if they sent you stuff the year before, its a waste to send it again?

it says on the sheet that they just disclose names of people and the information that they provide like what they want to major in to schools they dont report scores or ranges...

As I said before, the schools recieve information based on score ranges. (After all, Harvard doesn't send out mail to people who score 130.)

When a college recieves your name, they won't know your exact score. They will, however, know your score range based on the range they requested.

With your score, you'll get a constant trickle of mail, along with HUGE waves after you take the SAT, after Nat'l Merit Scholars are named, at the beginning of sr. year, etc. At first it's flattering, then it's informative, then it's overwhelming....now that it's nearly February of her senior year and all her applications are in, my D is still getting stuff. C'mon guys, give it up!

Sometimes it's hard to tell which round of PSAT scores generated the college mail, if a student has taken it more than once. This year my S, who is a junior, provided a different email address than he had in the past, so we should at least be able to track the college emails that way. So far this year, after having scored very well (easily NMSF), he has only heard from two schools via email at the new address. He kept his old one, and he still gets college mail at the old email address, too.

My memory of going through all this with my D, who is currently a college freshman, is that the mail from the most recent PSAT doesn't start till late January or early February following the PSAT, which fits with the experience of some of the posters above. Then, as astrophysicsmom notes, it doesn't stop!

My junior son has received several emails this week, but nothing yet via snail mail. My mailman will appreciate it if this trend continues.

I think it's starting for me. I put down my email address for the PSAT and this week got tons of email from colleges, all stuff like "We've sent the information packet that 'you' requested!" etc. I never got this much email before, but it's averaging 20-30 emails a day now. I'm readying for an onslaught of my mailbox.

Which isn't so bad. It makes me feel like the center of attention and very loved.

I know! It's very endearing. All of a sudden, I totally want to apply to the University of Evansville :D

In some ways it is flattering....son's PSAT score qualifies him for NMF and we just received a letter from a Harvard rep. She included her email address and encouraged my son to write if he had any questions!

Wow, awesome :)

After I took the PSAT last year it took a while to get anything, but then I got mail almost everyday for a year. it's just now stopped which is sad.

haha! I actually was really close to applying there just because of the mail they kept sending! the reason I didn't was because they required singing for auditions...
