Being Deferred Sucks

So I guess I'm probably one of the first people to get my letter cause I live in MD. I got deferred and am pretty crushed. The letter said about 15% of people deferred get accepted in regular admissions but at this point I'm too depressed to even consider that possibility. The main thing I'm trying to figure out is why i got deferred. Any ideas or advice on supplementing my app?

the only thing I can think of is that I declared my major as bio/english double major originally but they made me pick one. I picked bio but Im much stronger at writing and didnt take a science SAT II cause my most recent science class was an Anatomy class and they dont have an SAT II for that. Should I just take a science SAT II in some random subject and just try to cram a year of knowledge into my head in the next month?

what school did you apply to? the college?

College of Arts and Sciences

im really sorry to hear you were deferred. im in NJ. expecting my deferral on mon.

Hey! Don't worry about being deferred, it's just the way it goes, I was also deferred, and I got in, many times they just want to make sure that you are keeping up your good grades, your ECS, etc. I know a person on the Admissions committee and many time sthey don't accept someone EA, unless teh committee feels 100% sure that they are going to go. It's just part of the game, enjoy the rest of your senior year, keep your grades up, and good luck in April! :)

dan-who on admissions do you know? just out of curiosity.

Hey, I'm really sorry to hear that. Most likely I'll be getting my deferral on monday or tuesday.

Does the letter say how many applied and how many were accepted for the EA pool this year?

asdfjkl87- I'm really sorry to hear that you were deferred. can you make a new thread called "EA Decisions" and restate your decision there? We were planning it so the first person to be notified would start that thread. Thanks! :)

nope jangle there were no stats on the ea pool

Thnaks for the new thread. ;)

he's a Dean in the SFS, and my prof.

o gotcha. thanks

Major wouldn't affect the decision. What's your class rank?

This data is old--for the 2002 class--but if you were in the top 5 percent of your class and had an SAT Verbal in the 700's, your odds were 229/728; Math in the 700's, 235/754. Students simply don't understand how daunting the odds are AND IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HOW "GOOD" YOU ARE.

The high-end colleges--and Georgetown is one--could fill out two or three (four in Yale or Harvard's case) classes with completely different people with virtually no statistical difference in the result. An admissions decision--either way--should not be regarded as an assessment of your self worth...though it feels like crap. The best way that I've ever seen it described is this way: you're at a party and someone passes you with a tray of cookies...why do you pick that one instead of this one? Once you're in the selection pool...and the OP most certainly was...that's about how it is.

Good luck. Btw, I started a thread in the Parents Forum about people who were rejected/deferred ED/EA last year and how things turned out. There were about 10 posts as of last night and you may find it inspiring that every single student for whom that happened is extremely happy this year. You may want to read....
