Being Gay at Cal

Hi, I chose UC Berkeley because I plan on coming out when I'm there, as I've heard that UC Berkeley is one of the more/most accepting UC campuses for "queers".

So I was wondering if gays are really accepted there, and what organizations I should join to find like-minded people?

I was looking into QARC as I am Asian.

If anyone has any advice or experience, I would love to hear about it.

Have you looked into the theme housing that is Unity House? That might be a cool experience.

I hear Cal is very LGBT friendly/accepting. That was one of the factors for me too.

Never been to Berkeley myself, but the school’s liberal reputation is well-deserved; you’ll be welcomed at Cal. I’m sure they have some LGBT or Gay-Straight Alliance clubs over at Berkeley.

Frankly, I’d be shocked if there were significant homophobic sentiment at that school, so I think you should be fine.

If you don’t mind my asking, are you gay/bisexual?

I am sure gay people will do fine at Cal. I hope it would be the same for transgender people. I am FTM and I have applied to the Unity House.

@Cayton‌

Lol, I don’t know why I’m barely seeing this now. Yup I’m gay :stuck_out_tongue:

@ocnative‌

Oh, cool.

Actually, I myself am bisexual. We LGBT folks should stick together. :)

@Cayton: We would’ve if you went to UCB… Totally kidding. Have fun at UCLA! :)

@imaplealot‌

Thanks, and have fun at Cal yourself!

@Cayton‌

I was wondering how old both of you are? I’m 19 myself.

@imaplealot‌

I turned 21 last Monday.

@Cayton‌

Happy late birthday!

@imaplealot‌

I’m 20 right now but I’ll be 21 once the semester starts at Cal.

@ocnative‌

Thanks!

I got utterly, utterly drunk with friends on that day. :frowning:

No regrets though, lol

Berkeley is definitely heaven for anyone who is queer. I came out to my mom last semester and it was difficult. However, resources in Berkeley like Geneq, QSA, LGBT student group in Newman, Tang Center counseling, and Berkeley’s queer fraternity, Sigma Epsilon Omega have made the transition a lot easi4er and more fun. I would greatly advise you to rush for SEO if you are considering a frat. It is incredible to see how inaccurqate the media’s portrayal of what it means to be gay is limited. We are diverse and we each have a story. Welcome to Cal and if any of you need any advice feel free to message me. Go Bears!

@worrygooseB‌

Hey, what’s up? I’m actually pretty interested in SEO. How has your experiences been with that frat?

You should be perfectly fine at Cal being any Gay, transgendered or any affiliation with the LGBT community. There are many gay clubs, and Berkeley overall is a very liberal city. The priest at the church next to where I live is gay, and one of the rabbi’s at the synagogue that I attend is a FTM transgender man.

@ocnative: I just sent you a message in your inbox. It has been an amazing experience and I would strongly encourage you to join and come to rush events the first week of school
