Being Gay at Georgetown

Is being gay at Georgetown seriously looked down upon? I understand that Georgetown is a Jesuit institution, obviously making it not very pro-gay, but is it rigidly conservative? I don't expect parades to be floating through the streets, but is there at least some sort of a "gay scene" at Georgetown? Or is it too Catholic?

I don’t have any firsthand experience to help you.

GU Pride is really active, I can tell you that much. I was on their listserv this year and there were always emails about meetings, socials, parties, etc. having to do with gender identity, gay culture, whatever else you want. They went to some of the Prop 8 and other protests as well.

As far as Georgetown’s Jesuit identity, they are definitely not rigidly conservative. During orientation and convocation at the beginning of freshman year, they talk so much about acceptance and tolerance and I think that in practice it’s true as well. During a diversity thing a priest was talking about acceptance of different ethnicities, religions, etc, and also included sexual orientation, which really impressed me for a Catholic institution.

I definitely do not think you will be out of place at Georgetown being gay. The student body is overwhelmingly liberal, and the administration is liberal compared to other Catholics.

Oh okay thanks. While I’m here, do you guys think I have a decent shot of getting in Gtown? Here are my stats:
Generic:
Race: White
Grade: Class of 2010
State: Massachusetts
School: Parochial, competitive at the top of the class, gets about 5 kids into Ivies a year out of 250, others into good schools.

Academic:
Class Rank: Top 10% (we’re not told specific rank, only which 10% we’re in).
GPA UW: 91/100
GPA W: 104/100
SAT I: 770 CR, 790 M, 760 W, 2320 T
SAT IIs: (I am retaking all of them, but as of now): 670 Spanish, 750 Math II, 720 Literature
APs: Calc AB, Eng Lang (Self-Study), US History…took all exams in May 09 and am expecting to at least pass all, but I will probably do better than just pass.
Senior Course Load: Psychology Honors, AP English Lit, AP Biology, AP Statistics (ive exhausted all other math classes), AP Spanish, and AP Chemistry (outside of school at MIT).
Other:
~I am the only junior to take 3 APs
~ NOBODY at my school gets a 4.0 GPA
~ I broke my school’s 4 AP limit for my senior year because I thought the rule was ridiculous
~ I was in AP Physics this year, but because the class wasn’t too good I did not take the exam.
~I transferred to my high school sophomore year, so my rank is lower than it should be and all my clubs are 3 years, not 4.

Extracurriculars:
Captain Varsity Tennis Team (10-12)
Captain Academic Decathalon (10-12)
Math Team (10-12)
AMIGOS (11-12) [this is a charity program to help underpriveleged children]
Volunteer at Local Food Pantry and Local Homeless Shelter
Volunteer at Local Hospital (one of my passions as I want to go premed)
Job at local ice cream store and grocery store (different time periods)

Essays: Would an esasy about how being gay has sculpted who I am be bad?
Recs: Should be very good.

excellent chances

Hey sorry this is a kind of late response, but I think you have a great chance. I would make sure to write a great and unique essay (please write about something you actually care about not something you think they would want to hear lol). Also, make sure to explain why your clubs are only 3 years in your interview, because that’s absolutely understandable. I had lower SAT scores than you and I got admitted through EA. And on a kind of random note, be thankful that you didn’t take the AP Physics test (I took the C test), because the FRQs were ridiculous, at least for my class. We hadn’t learned any of the material needed to answer them so I don’t know if it was just our teacher or if it was just a hard test year lol. Anyway, good luck with everything!

you have a great chance at Gtown
unlike the Ivies, Gtown isnt a reach for everyone-for some people it is predictable. I would say you have a very good chance

Thanks for this thread. I was wondering the same thing; I’ve heard very bad things about Gtown re:being gay.
