Being gay at Rice University

Hi, I LOVE rice university but I'm openly gay. I'm pretty nervous. Many people have been telling me that Rice is pretty homophobic. Is it true? Would I have a hard time for being gay?
Would I be able to make friends? Date?

thanks!

Who are these people telling you that? Rice is not homophobic. Rice has a very inclusive culture. It’s a very diverse school of people from around the world, different views, a spectrum of socioeconomic status, race, sexual orientation, etc. You would not have a hard time being YOURSELF at Rice. From my experience, all these aspects are second to the PERSON you are. I can guarantee you will not only make friends, but you will making these friends the first day you step on campus. Dating will be a little hard because of the size of Rice. It’s a small school, meaning a smaller gay population. But then again, you are in Houston, the 4th largest city in the country, so there is a larger gay population.

On a side note, the mayor of Houston is an open lesbian …and a Rice alum. That should tell you something.

PM me if you have any other questions.

Wow!! Thank you SO much! You have no idea how happy you just made me!!

Agree that Rice is not homophobic at all. It has an incredible conservatory level music school, and my D had lots of gay friends in the music school. One of her close friends (gay male) was very active in the Episcopal campus ministry and was just ordained as a priest.
